I Apologize. I didn't notice the UK location. That is definitely an issue. I have a good friend in NZ with the same issue as you do.

If the gauge moves with the wire to ground, the problem is the sending unit. Short and sweet! Don't go down the rabbit hole of ripping your car apart and bench testing the dashboard gauge cluster, It's not necessary. Try another sender. Why don't you just go to local auto store for a sending...

I am pretty sure that the wheel offset is different between the two widths.
