Clockspring in column?

I'm sure this is a stupid question... Is there a clock spring in the column on a 73 duster? I know there are on modern cars. The reason I ask is; I pulled the column out today and need to know if I need to secure the wheel to keep it from spinning so the spring (if there is one) doesn't break. What is a clock spring for anyway?
