I just bought a 74 duster someone has changed the front drums to disc at some time. It was not the guy I bought it from how can I check to make sure they performed the swap properly & with the correct parts?

if the car stops than chances are they didn't do too bad of a job. you should see a proportioning valve near the firewall down low if so than great. if not than hopefully there is an adjustable valve somewhere near the rear brakes. that valve can be adjusted to apply more or less pressure to the rear drums.

how do you know they changed from drum to disc?? I have a 74 duster and mine came with discs from the factory.

if it stops and steers good I would roll with it. 74 should be BBP from the factory...

Is it possible someone changed the rear? My 74 has 5 x 4.5 all around and front disc as well.

I would retorque all the bolts and nuts, to be sure. Make sure you do not move the Cam bolts or you will change alignment. Regrease everything also.

Badsport and BoutTime,

If you have LBP front and SBP on the rear, somebody has put 73 and newer disc brakes on your car.

Check your data tag..
B43 is disc brakes
B41 is power assist

On 73 and newer A-Bodies.........
Drum brakes were the standard set-up on Slant 6. You got a 5x4 inch bolt pattern and a 7.25 rear end.
Disc where standard on V8 cars. 5X4.5 bolt pattern

If you ordered disc brakes on a Slant 6 that got you the 5x4.5 inch bolt pattern.

If you ordered power brakes, that immediately upgraded the brakes to disc.

Power brakes were standard on 340 cars and mandatory on 318 A/C cars.

Yellowdartdave,
I do not believe that is entirely correct. I have a 1973 swinger that came with a slant six and it had disc brakes standard. I believe drum brakes stopped being offered after 1972 (on a-body front ends anyways. I know they stuck with drums on the rear.)

If he has a small-bolt pattern on the reaar, then it sounds like somebody changed out the rear end at some point.

Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong, everybody. I'm still learning.

Dave is dead nuts right. If you had drums on the 73-76 A bodies, you got the SBP. Discs got the LBP.

where do i find the data tag? and i checke dthe rear last night, im certain it is a 7.25
and i checked the measurements on the rear if i am doing it correct it is 5 x 4 and the spare matches the rear....

Good idea to post some pictures of the front and rear with the wheels off. It might help see if it was changed or not.

The data tag is attached to the driver side inner fender just to the rear of the battery.
You read them bottom line 1st and then go up one line and then the next

Post yours and we can figure it out really quick.

Here is the data tag and I'll work on getting a picture with the wheels off.
