Painting/Coating Headers

Hi Folks,

Since I will be pulling the headers to replace my steering gearbox, I thought I'd clean them up and hit them with a coat of something. I'm looking at the "Hi-Temp POR-15 exhaust manifold paint" product. Anyone have any experience with this stuff? Any other products I may want to look into?

Let us know how that turns out.

I did my manifolds with the regular "metal mask" that looks like cast iron.
I primed one and din't prime the other.
I have a feeling it won't last.
The unprimed one is starting to show some rust already.

I had the same thought about the paint you mentioned on headers, since nothing else really works.

See if your local paint and body supply store can get it for you.
Mine is the same price as ordering from ebay, or POR 15, but there is no shipping charge.

Thanks for the reply YY1. Guess I will go ahead and give the POR-15 manifold paint a try. Summit sells the stuff so I will order some when I place my next order. Will post up some before/after pics for you, as well as the long-term follow up.

It will be....guess it can't be worse than they look now.

Divenut, where in Illinois are you? The outrageous cost of shipping a pair of headers back and forth is pretty much what forced me to get out of the high temp ceramics business, but I can still do them and we're not that far apart.

If you're interested in a flat black or silver Cerakote high temp coating, I've got some on hand right now -- give me a call and we can go over the details. I hate to see anybody try some untested product on their car.

I used POR-15 on all my suspension parts and it worked fantastic. That was in 05 and they still look great. Since it worked so good on the suspension I thought it'd be equally as good on the headers but it wasn't. Lasted less than a year and rust was popping out everywhere. Within 3 years they looked almost as bad as yours. I then pulled them back off and blasted them perfectly clean again and used VHT and it lasted about 2 yrs. and was back to rust again. This spring I pulled them off again (I'm a glutton for punishment) and once again blasted them perfectly clean and tried Eastwood's high temp coating. Got about 500 miles on it and rust is starting to pop through again. My opinion is nothing short of hi-temp ceramic coating is worth your time and money. Especially when they are such a PITA to R&R. Got a new set of Doug's ceramic coated headers coming so I can throw the ill fitting Hookers in the dumpster.
 
Well, got the headers off my 340. Actually wasn't as bad as I was expecting. Taking off the steering gearbox (old one's shot) and the starter the driver's side wiggled right out. Had to remove the 90 degree oil filter mounting plate and the passenger side dropped right out. Really glad I did not have to jack up the motor :cheers:

Gonna media blast them and hit them up with a few coats of POR-15 exhaust manifold paint. Will let everyone know how it turns out.
