My oldest works down in NYC, His boss gave him a 95 Range Rover,...for free,...He's had it for about 4 months,...

So he shows up today with a shopping list of "Hey Dad, Can you fix this" list. This thing is a beast, has to weigh in at 5000 lbs,... gotta 3.9 V8, Slush pump trani, pretty serious military lookin front end and frame underneath,...gets about 5 mpg,...

I know these things eat plugs so I got some of those,...needs rear disc's and pads, shifts hard, P/S whine, gotta fuel leak, a light to medium miss, broken hatch support at the top end of the gas hatch cylinder, etc, etc, blah, blah,...every parent knows this song,... he's leavin it here for a couple of weeks for some TLC...

....anyone got any insite on these behemoths. I generally avoid brit stuff like an STD, but he is my kid,...:sad6:

Yes. My neighbor is a senior Range Rover tech at the rover dealer in Portland.

This is his recommendation on all Rover products:

If you have one, sell it.

If you are thinking about buying one, don't.

As he likes to point out, the only thing good about them is that they are so unreliable and expensive to repair that he doesn't need to worry about running out of work.

I'll be tellin that to the boy when he comes back to get It,...I had a bad feelin when he told me about the high shift points at light throttle,...His boss had a boneyard trani put in about 6 months ago,.....I Hate boneyard mechanicals,...You're doin everything twice,...Doin It twice don't make It twice as good,.......BTW, My wife is from Albany/Tangent,...

I had a friend that worked in an exotic car shop, and his advice on the Range Rover was also to sell it immediately.

He said that it's a fine vehicle for people with more money than sense.

Series LRs and Range/Disco/LRx are totally different animals. The series run a Buick V8, don't forget.

Kinda looks like a buick mill,...anyways, I'm just tryin to keep the kid from gettin ripped off in the city

Free range, rover...

Is that like free range chicken? But a dog?

I was wonderin who would be the first to comment on that,..... Its definitely a "DOG", ( Rover is very sick).....barely made it up the hill to the house,....Prolly got a partially plugged "CAT"

His boss (the donor), said it was not practicle in the city, an it cost him waaaayyyyy too much to park, (an underground parking spot can cost almost as mush as rent),maintain and fuel,...so the kid drives it 2 miles a day, a told him he should stick with skateboard and bicycle.

So far this morning, I've found brand X wires with burns on em, ancient NGK's, and metal to metal with rust groves on the rear rotors,

Now I gotta clean the throttle body and find the P/S leak,....He's gonna crap when I give him the parts estimate...

Anything else I need to be lookin at???????

X2 .Great Advice.

This indeed is a Buick Motor that they purchased the rights and merely added fuel injection.

There was a reason they gave it away.
Exactly

If you are chasing a misfire if it is not the plugs and plug wires it will be the valves hanging up in the guides.I worked at Land Rover of Austin for only a year....Man that was the worst job I ever had.I totally dislike the product.
We carried rebuilt heads which we had done locally, and when I say we stocked them,I mean that we had 15 sets.I personally did 3 to 4 a week most under warranty.Vehicles with 30,000 miles !!!
The correct way to repair the head is to drill out the guides for bronze inserts.
When I was not swapping heads,I was replacing transmissions.
Run Forest Run !!!
I clean her up really good and sell her now !!!
Take your losses now and donate that vehicle to a church and take that tax deduction.(of course you will be out just your time and parts now)

A free 95 Rover, and it came from NYC...if it was sold new in NYC than it was sold at Zumbach Sports Cars. I was the service manager of the new car prep department of Zumbach from 94 until 02. I hated those pieces of crap then and still hate them now. Range Rovers, Land Rovers, Discoverys and Defenders were all garbage. Oil leaks, Transmission and electical problems were all we saw.

So does anyone know where the location of the OBD connector???

And what the hell is module under the front passenger seat that is currently unplugged???

Check engine light is on,(no surprise), Right side O2 is missing, gotta bolt stuck in where the sensor should be,...

Looks like I gotta pull the axle's to replace the rear rotors

OBD 11 Connector is on right side of the tranny hump to the left of the glove box.
The module under the seat is the ABS module.Leave it unplugged it is bad, they all are...
On the range rover rear discs just have a set screws that hold them on...on the discovery and defender you pull the axles...

Sounds like you should punch him in the mouth for giving his problems to your son... :violent1:

we had one.. of course the wife loved it.. but.. the mechanic(me) hated it. gave us about 95000 miles of driving.. but.. it was a sensor nightmare.. coolant temp sensors.... then finally i had a smell of coolant.. pressure test.... ummm yea. head gaskets. got rid of it before they got real bad.. but.. if the car was free to me.. i woulda fixed it. just time.. most people don't catch a leaky head gasket until its too late..

Good opportunity for your son to ask for a raise at work.you know I got transportation to pay for....And then sell that sucker!!!
Better yet give to someone you do not like so much...LOL

Put some 22 inch rims from a pawn shop on it and ask 15k.

My son liked that one the best,... LOL

But I'm stuck with It,...Not a bad lookin rig, I'll fix It, Detail It, Throw some tint on the windows, take It up to Harlem for the quick sale at summers end,...Hey, a free car for NYC, At least he ain't makin payments on somethin thats gonna get the crap beat outa It in the city anyway,..

He won't keep It long,...I'll talk him into an old Cherokee,...they never die, they just rest for a bit...

My dad worked for a guy one time that lived in Britain for a few years. His thoughts on their products were "The only thing that doesn't suck from Britain is their vacuum cleaners." Just a thought, but hey, I've flipped a few freebees for a profit. Nothing wrong with getting your moneys worth (or lack there of) out of the thing.

Just spent an hour and a half to get the a rear rotor off,...brakeline blew in the process,...and you cant lock the rotor with the brakes applied unless the ignition is on,....and you have to do this to pull the rear axle,.....WTF

It's Baaaaaack,....

The kid left NYC this morning to come up for thanksgiving with the family,...Called me from Mamaronck sayin he lost the trany,... Hi revs, No Go,...Shut it off, let it rest for a bit, started it again after it cooled, hit the highway and drove it a hundred miles,...

Made it to 4 miles from here,...Had to push it to the firehouse parking lot,....

So My cuz and I drove down to rescue him and his entourage, I hopped in it, put it in gear and damn if the thing went into gear,....

Joke was on me, I made it about 1 mile before I had hi revs accompanied by unholy buzzing, growling and winding noises from the trans. ....

I will take the truck and a chain down in the morning and drag it home where it will stay till I sell it for parts or whole,...

Did anyone else besides me and Stevie Wonder see this coming????
