I want to get rid of the charcoal canister and related hoses just to clean up my engine compartment. What should I do with the line running from the gas tank to the charcoal filter?

Leave it hooked to the charcoal canister!!! Aside from possibly offending your underhood Feng Shui I can think of no good reason to get rid of this. At $4 a gallon if you would rather have your gas evaporate before you get a chance to burn it, just replace your gas cap with a pink shop rag.

I plan to get rid of mine as well.
I don't want no underhood fung shooey hooey. :)

C130 Chief's point is well taken. The charcoal canister is one of those few emissions control items which really doesn't adversely impact performance / mileage.

However (assuming you are in a locale where you won't run afoul of Big Brother for having done so)......

If you find the canister unsightly and want to clean things up underhood, you can either relocate it out of view behind a fender panel (my choice)...... Or delete it.

If you delete it, plug off all lines that were routed to it...... And replace your gas cap with a vented cap from the years priour to fitment of such canisters.

Hope this gives you some ideas,

Harry

"Few" is an exaggeration.

…except not, because A-bodies never had vented caps.
