Don't be so sure.

We all remember how in the '80s Iaccoca used to rant and rail against what was perceived as the Japanese takeover of the American economy. At the very same time, he was buying top-quality rustproof steel from Japan Steel because nobody in the US made it and he never wanted there to be a repeat of the F-body rust problem.

It was very good quality steel he bought from the Japanese. He turned it into cars that certainly had (and have) their shortcomings and cut corners and pinched pennies, but which didn't/don't rust anywhere near as fast as the competing cars from GM and Ford.
