If you leave a new car, say like mine a 2012, idling in the drive, will the computer eventually shut the engine off?

some have an idle stop, i dont remember what the parameter's are to engage it but some have it... does it start right back up when you go to Accel from the light...

Define eventually... I have never heard of such a feature on new cars. That could be a risk, say if you leave somebody in the car with the A/C on. Then again, newer cars have seat weight sensors to activate seatbelt/airbag lights.

I'm going to say no, but I wouldn't be surprised if some automakers did have this feature.

I have to ask... why the inquiry?

I ask because my car went dead over nite, with the key either in acc or run position, and since I don't know which, since I was not the first one in it, I thought a definite answer would help to troubleshoot it. The battery was dead enough so that the key couldn't be put into the off position. It didn't run out of gas. I guess I'll just charge the battery for a few hours at a couple of amps, and then test it. If it checks out ok then I'll just chalk it up to oh well, and see if it happens again. Thanks for your replys.

Not sure about cars, but I know diesel trucks have an hour meter. A place I used to work for has an '07 F350, the foreman would sit in it with the A/C on just idling and it shut down one day. It was taken to the dealer and we found out it shut down after "excessive" idling.

It was probably a plugged DPF(due to excessive idling). A lot of companies in the oil field here in Wyoming remove the DPF on their diesels and tell the employees not to shut them off in the winter at all unless they are in the shop due to the cold weather.

Doesn't have a DPF, it's a 6.0 PowerJoke. DPF wasn't around til the '08 'Jokes came out.

Isn't it funny how the REAL diesel, Cummins, still doesn't use that crap, runs cleaner, and makes more power?

It really depends on what type of vehicle you own. As Ed mentioned your vehicle could have an idle-stop feature. These types of cars are also known as mild-hybrids. Although they do not have electric motors like a real hybrid they do have a regenerative breaking system, battery and electric starter. Many people may not be aware but BMW has been using idle stop technology in the mini cooper since 2007 and Audi has been using it on some models since 2009. I have also read that it is available on the Mazda 3.

I have a diesel that will shut down quickly, unless you set the high idle at which stage it will run itself out of fuel in a couple of weeks. As far as I'm concerned I didn't even buy a car. I bought a camera in a bumper. Ever try to carry one of those around with you? A bunch of electric motors. Some portable electric heaters mounted in the seats. I got a couple of toasters in the outside rear view mirrors. There is a tv in the inside rear view mirror. A sat communication system. Two kinds of radios. I also have locks that do as they please, lights that do as they please. Many annoying things that beep and buzz and hum, and whatever. A million cubic feet of head room, but I can't even see half the plugs. Can you tell I'm thrilled. I have a ten thousand dollar car with $25,000 worth of crap bolted to it that no one in their right mind would actually buy.

I was having a little trouble with this as well, so I did a GOOGLE search on it and I'm now thinking it must be one of those 2012 HolyCrap Why'dIBuyIt.....

Not knowing much about the HolyCrap brand I looked that up on Wikipedia, what I found there was that HolyCrap falls under the WhatWasIThinking family of cars. The Why'dIBuyIt name badge has been used quite regularly over the years by the WhatWasIThinking Motor Company. The WMC has struggled to stay in the market during these tough economic times but they manage to stay in the game and come out with new models every year. Some other popular WhatWasIThinking Motor Company models that you might recognize or may have seen are the It'sCrap, or the ShootMeNow, and the ever popular compact, ShitBox. Glad I came upon this post so I could learn about this car company that I had never heard of.

Hope I got a little chuckle out of some of you and I hope I didn't piss anyone off. Best of luck with your car. I hate working on newer stuff, they have made everything so smart.:shaking2:

Sorry to take so long in response. I haven't had internet access for over a week. I asked the question generically, thinking that most new cars would have the same basic functions. Car is a 2012 Traverse. No problems since. Johnson rod I guess.

If any car is left not running with the key on it will drain the battery. On the newer full feature cars I would think it would happen faster.
