Installing MP cam 4529270 They recommend Springs # P3690933 which I have. Stock BB heads with 3/8 stock valves, what retainer should I use? I have looked in all my books ETC. and the retainer numbers for this spring seem to be something that wont fit a stock valve? I know all the number in the books and none seem to fit the switch over. This cam change has likely been done a million times...so what retainer are you guys using? locks would stay 8Deg, or move up to 10? Relatively stock rebuild just a cam upgrade and springs to match....So..what have you used and what works?
Thanks!

Humm, The numbers are not the ones listed in the cat. for that cam. these 3/8 valve stem stock heads stock valves. There does seem to be some confusion on what retainers to use with the 3690933 springs. The stock retainers are way to sloppy on the spring and I believe 4452033 is a number for a stock but stronger replacement. The spring is a single spring with damper. Retainer for dual spring can be used with a single spring that I know. What retainer for this spring (3690933) on a stock 3/8 valve?
Thanks!

Thanks, I will look into this once again....The springs other than the ones you mention and the ones recomended in the Mopar manual seem to come up as 5/16 valves?
Just dont know, this cam is a regular 440 HP, and I want to use the springs the manual calls for yet the retainers the manual calls for dont work with stock 3/8 valves? What am I missing here?
LOL

The retainers bOb listed are for a 3/8" stem and are recommended by Mopar Performance for the p3690933 spring on a big block.

I think I understand the confusion, these springs were a step above stock replacement for the street hemi back in the day. And the hemi had 5/16" stems.

When I change the stock 383 magnum spring to the 933(20 years ago)I keep my magnum spring retainer and never had an issue with these

Thanks all! Yes the 5/16 valve...seems to be what the numbers recommend for the retainer for this spring.
I will check again on some old heads and stock retainers. I dis try a stock retainer but it seems sloppy and moves around quite a bit as the center of the retainer is small and the spring (933) are a larger diameter than a stock spring. Will take another look and some old heads and pull some retainer to measure.

No, seems the springs (933) I am using for the cam (270) and the recomended spring for the cam are also used for the Hemi The recomended retainers (listed for this cam) are 5/16 Hemi valve size not 3/8 like B-RB stock size. So, retainer for the 3/8 valve available (2033) are a stock replacment now made from a better material than stock.
Looks like I am going to try a one of these retainers for fit oon the (933) spring.
My guess is it will work fine. But there is some confussion in the Mopar parts cat. with the matching of these particular parts. Most guys are using the aftermarket spring retainer, cam, locks so matching all this is easy
