I have a 74 duster with a (probably) stock 318, last year one day it just stopped idling, the engine will run if I keep a foot on the brake and one on the gas. I dont have a tach so I don't know what rpm the engine dies at. any help is appreciated.

also the car sat for 5 to 6 years before I got it. I replaced the fuel pump, rubber fuel lines, fuel filter, oil, coolant, and I only drove it for most of one summer.

EDIT: I only got the car last year. and it was garaged over the winter.

Have you cleaned your carb or rebuilt it lately? The idle circuit could very well be clogged up. Try blowing carb cleaner and air through the idle circuit.

the carb has not been rebuilt because I cant find a kit to do it. and my local carb rebuild place quoted me $150+

Fresh fuel?

Old gasoline will make a car run really bad.

yeah, I flushed the tank of old fuel and it had fres gas in the tank, but I emptied the tank for storage over the winter. just looking for what to do to get it back on the road this summer.

What carb? I may have a kit.
I just came into a butt load of obsolete aftermarket parts. I bought everything mopar they had. I mean everything!

generally speaking it will die at zero RPM
:D

with the car having sat for so long im with kiss, gunk from the tank travelled up into the carb

perfect excuse for a dual plane intake and 600 CFM carb

I would but I dont have the money for a intake and carb. the car actualy came with a torker 340 in the trunk that I sold to do the fuel pump, and fluid changes.

count the # of turns to get the (2) idle mixture screws in to lightly seated so you can easily return them to their original position(s) then take them out & shoot a 2 second blast of starting fluid into each screw hole then replace the screws. adapt one of those thin red straws to the SF can nozzle so you can get the straw in the hole(s) & blast em good.

is "lightly seated" like hand tight or would that be to much?

yes just down to lightly snugged with your small screwdriver. if for example they take 2&1/2 turns CW to get to that point then remove em/blast the holes/reinstall em to lightly seated/unscrew em CCW 2&1/2 turns.
