Fender Trim

Hey yall. Bought a set of fender extension trim off of Ebay about a month ago. I've been hitting it with polishing compound ever since, and its improved pretty well so far. My question is, can I ever get it back to a uniform shine without getting it rechromed? I've gotten a lot of the pitting down so far. What are my options here? Can I sand on it? I don't have a problem putting it on as is, my car won't ever be a show car. But if I can make it look better then I'd love to.

I would be extremely careful sanding chromed steel as the "chrome" is very thin. You might end up with shiny steel instead. Look at some YouTube videos on this.
