My combination, is a yearly thick wall 340 .60 over 4" stroker(steel) crank 12.1 comp. B1ba heads (300cfm on intake at 700") custom cam motion with 1.6 rockers it is at 684in. 684ex. Edelbrock Str with a custom 1"spacer raising top plate and woodspacers under ea. of the two holley650 hp, billet main caps, studs, and gurdle. It dyno'd at 579 hp 580 tq at 5800rpm. I want to put a 200hp shot of nos on my 68 gts full interior all steel. I wish I would have been more patient for an R3 block. But wondering what you all think?

All cranks are steel,,,the difference is the process, cast or forged. So are you saying its forged? I'd say go small, 75 shot, work your way up. Did you gap rings for spraying?

My bad I meant forged
At .060" over your maybe pushing it to come up to near 800hp with the spray. But, if it was mine I would probably try it. Mines a similar build at .030" over, I'd give it some spray if I had set my ring gap for it, and had a timing retard device.

On 275 drag radials 391's spool 1.60 60ft I ran a 11.09 I think at 121mph but it was leaning out pretty bad in third gear and was fighting some cooling issues I staged at195 deg with a flex fan (yeah I know) I'm confident I will run consistant 10:90 now some of those gremlins are worked out. I have no roll bar so ......I had one pass

Actually, no, all cranks are NOT steel. There's the stock nodular IRON and forged steel......with all kinda alloys for different cranks.

Ya it was a blanket statement,,,but for what we are buying as new replacement these days they are cast or forged,,,,which are both steel, with other amounts of alloy like nickel and chrome to strengthen. Very much the same thing other then the process of one being poured in to a mold and the other pressed into its final shape.
And I'm also talking about what the average Joe would buy,,,not the high high end billet etc.
My bad

The good thing is my crank will handle way more than the block. The crank is not billet though . So has any body done something similar

YOU could be THAT guy that can lead the rest to glory or give them the advice of how they shouldn't put 800HP through their .060" over smallblock. 50/50 either way, lol. I'm sure you could spray it a couple times, maybe a dozen, maybe more but I think you're likely in trouble at some point.

I do agree, with you. I was looking for for evidence. I may just have to be that guy, agian! Anyways thanks for the reply

That's a beautiful engine with the STR, and it makes huge power as is.

My first thought is, you're crazy pushing any more power thru a "non" roll bar/caged car that's already capable of going 10's, especially on Drag radial's. Safety first my friend, seriously!

Second, if you really want to push some major juice thru that engine, go with a big single 4bbl intake.....it will be way more controllable imo.

Ya, I'm sorry had no concrete advice on it. I do know lots of people think 600hp is too much for a stock block and that definitely a load of bunk,,,if you build it right. I'm at 600 and like I said if I had gapped for spray I would definitely run a 150 shot without thinking twice. With only 150 maybe the gap might not be a big deal anyway, I don't know, I haven't spent any time on the subject. But 12 yrs ago I had Mustang GT daily driver that I sprayed 150 on the factory bottom end and never had issues. Good luck with figuring it out, I'm sure someone with experience will chime in at some point. Cheers

A well prepped 340 (non stroked /reworked 3.31 factory stroke crank/ factory WELL REWORKED factory rods/thick deck Arias ,loosely fit old product (think ,like 82..) /.030 over, was taking a 250 hit 20 years ago. ( low10's@ 128-130) Single Holley 950 H.P., traditional Dick Landy/Direct Connection fuel system modified. Never broke.. Spend duckers, on the machine work, don't get stupid on tune.

There was a guy on here that had 980hp at the rear wheels with a 416 twin turbo stock block .like said before it's all in the tune.

My pump gas 408 ran 6.57 @ 108 in my 3260# 69 Dart. After running it for five years I pulled it to freshen it up. What I found was odd main and cam bearing wear from the front to the back. I've talked to and had several guys that build engines look at it and they came to the same conclusion that I did, block flex.

This is a 71 block, align hone, .030" over, square decked and balance rotating assembly. I don't know how much HP it made but I'm satisfied that 50 more would've busted it.

Good luck.

Did you run factory main caps or a stud girdle? 6.57 is hauling arse, must be in the 650 range?

Factory main caps with ARP studs. I'm guessing the hP was in the 550-575 range. The car works decent with 1.38-1.41 60'.

Thanks, I asked just cause like the OP I'm running Girdle, Billet Caps and ARP studs, and I'll be curious as to what I see in comparison when I give my stroker a freshening. You had your ride hookin n bookin with those 60 footers, nice job!

I have been thinking about spraying my 340 stock block to see if I can get in the 5's in the 1/8. My best ET so far has been 6.21 at 2950 lbs driven to the track.. When it was dynoed it made 662 hp @ 7300 on 93 octane. It is a 73 340 block with a moper 3.79 billet crank, ARP main studs, Stock caps no girdle or block fill,CompStar rods and JE pistons. 10.9 compression,Indy 360-2 heads (flow 337 @.650)and 255/266 @ .050 solid roller. I am hoping I can get in the 5's with just a 50hp shot.
If you spray yours let us know how it turns out.
