Fuel tank in my 72 demon needs cleaned badly. What do I need to know about removing the filler tube . Also what is best process for cleaning the tank once removed?
Another item, I have a trap door air cleaner, where does vacuum line attach to carb? Carb is Carter thermoquad with one port on left front and two ports on rear to which choke is attached to right port and distributor on left.

I would remove the filler tube first, so you don't damage the car pulling on the tank to get it off the filler tube. Second, I would buy a new tank, but keep the old sending unit. The new ones suck. Re use the original sealing ring. The new ones leak. I tried cleaning out a tank with junk in it. Kept leaving me on the side of the road. New tank and lines, no more Issues. Also, drain the tank completely before you try to remove it. You'll be sorry if you don't.

When I did mine, I removed the screws up by the filler, and pulled the filler tube out.

Unhook the fuel lines and wire from the sender, unhook the straps and it's out.

As always, use caution, fuel vapors and sparks don't get along!

As far as cleaning it, I would pull the sender once it's out, and take a good look. It may be better to just get a new tank.

I cleaned mine when I got the car, but before my new engine goes in I will install a new tank, larger supply line and a return line.

It's an easy job as long as you get most of the gas out before you drop the tank. I took the filler neck off first and then got the gas out with an electric pump. Remove supply hose, ground strap and vent hose(s). Then 2 j-bolts on the straps and its out. You can support the tank with a floor jack and piece of plywood while you are getting the straps off.

Too bad you are not closer to me. I have a slightly used tank for sale cheap. The shipping would probably be more than what I want for the tank.

I believe that the trap door is supposed to have intake vacuum, not ported vacuum.

Ported vacuum ports are usually "higher" on the carb, and the intake vacuum ports are usually lower and come off the base/base plate....

Start the engine and let the car idle. Take a vacuum gauge and put it on each port and see what the vacuum reading is. Intake vacuum will have vacuum at idle, ported vacuum will not... Hook it into one of the ports with intake vacuum...

Right about replacing tank, it and sender were roached New one on order. Don't know why I always kill time thinking I can save stuff that shouldn't.
Left front catb port opens trap door at idle, closes under acceleration . The two ports on Rear are currently being used. Don't have vacume gauge, now what.
