Agree. The factory issued a letter to dealers around mid year to replace the 7 1/4" rear with the 8.75 on a warranty repair. Mainly pertained to the 4 speed cars. NHRA followed suit by a rule change that allowed the 8.75 rear in the 65.

That confirms what I heard. Sort of a warranty replacement/"oops we underbuilt" it deal. My first 65 Barracuda V8 had 9's stock, and with 5 people in the car, I couldnt lock them up from 50 .
