I have tail lights on my 66 dart, that have the chrome body. It is badly pitting. I want to sand it smooth and then paint it black. What do I need to do to make it all work? And to make sure the black paint doesnt start to flake off. Is there a certain spray paint that is designed for pitted metal on a car?

BTW I have rear black out (and front), the previous owner had removed all the trim and painted it black. This tail light I found needs to replace one of the current damaged tail lights.

I am talking ghetto here, not air brush stuff. I mean can with a rattle ball in it. Thanks guys.

Pick the pimples with a screwdriver, sand em flat, dig in the centers of them with a phillips screwdriver, fill the holes with bondo and use some of that chrome spray paint. It should be tolerable if you can just touch up the bad spots with a fine thin paint brush and spray the paint into the cap and just dab it to the bad areas.....just a thought

I would want the chrome completely removed to paint it if it was me.
I just "sand blasted" some chrome plated steel interior trim.
I did it outside with the wind and HEPA filters on my face.
I got the chrome completely off to paint the steel.
If you are sanding chrome, be careful.
I think it's bad to breathe.

U may want to try filler primer spray paint. That's what I used on my rims. Scuff it up, put a few coats of filler primer on, let it dry, sand it till u start seeing the chrome again, put a few more coats, sand again, and keep at it till the pits are filled in and sanded out. Then do a few more coats of filler primer to smooth the sanding marks and hit it with the black u want.
