I have a 69 Dart that is currently an automatic that I would like to convert to standard.
I'm looking to create a grocery list of everything needed to do the conversion.
I know there are kits I can buy to do the whole job in one shot, but they seem to be very expensive.

I'm not sure which tranny I'm going to go with, probably a A833 or maybe even a 5 speed.

Is there a kit I can buy that has everything except the tranny? I have no problem, or even prefer, to go with aftermarket stuff as I know they tend to be less expensive.

Any help is appreciated.

best way is to have all the needed parts off a parts correct parts car or these parts from a person that took them all off a c orrect car. yes I have pieced this stuff together from swaps, pieces off parts cars etc.... BUT I have changed over many cars to 4 speeds over the years.......
I might recommend Wayne Brewers ( brewers performance). he has all parts needed, and there are lots of small parts too, like bushings clips, etc etc.. he carries. he has been a go to guy for man years. its their business.
be forewarned, non of this is CHEAP> it all adds up!!!

Call Brewers. Have room on your credit card for 4k+. Problem solved. Good luck.

IF a person has good knowledge of what is needed, go for it......... I love piecing this stuff together . takes a while. but lots of pitfalls out there. for instance, if you end up with a wrong Z bar, you can cut and weld and make you one. IF you get a wrong shifter box, ie chevy box, well, sell it and get a correct mopar box. buying parts is like Christmas!!!!! yes you will spend bucks buying it all for retail prices at lets say at Wayne's..., but you will get a correctly rebuilt 4 speed, all correct parts,...... yes you can do this on your own... you can rebuild a 4 speed A833 ??? or have a mechanic that can?
any direction you go, if like me, ... I love banging gears and will till me knees fall off!!!! ha

For the cost and work involved and since you have an auto car all ready I'd jump to a TKO or T-56 swap. Regardless of transmission you need to modify the floor tunnel.

I'm doing a Hurst TKO conversion and all went smooth but it's more work to do to a factory 4 speed car than an auto in regards to the tunnel work.

How hard can it be???? You running a slant or v8? Slant don't need much. Trans. Bell housing. Pedals. Linkage. Fork. Zbar unless you go hydraulic, driveshaft flywheel and those bolts, clutch and fork. Shifter. Boom. Done

And a crank that will accept a four speed, unless you want to cut mainshaft. I collected parts over four years to do conversion. If you watch all the boards and eBay, stuff will show up reasonably priced eventually if you know what to look for. And swap meets.

Search the Manual Transmission & Clutch Discussions section, all of your answers are in there.

Not quite my friend. A lot more involved that you think. Ask me how I know?
Plan to shell out around $2k + for parts, that's if you will do all of the work.

I plan on doing mine as well and I have most of the parts except the trans. And hump. Already have the bell housing which is hardest to find in my opinion. I'm not paying 8-1300 bucks for the trans though. I'll use a a203 3 spd in the floor before spending that much on a trans. It definitely ain't cheap for sure. Half the price is the trans but everyone wants an arm and a leg for it.

Some guy tried to sell me one at a car show. Not even a mopar guy, 1400 bucks. No bell housing and no shifter. Seems the norm around here. I'll find one for cheap one day. Until then I'll keep my 3 on the tree and keep barking 2nd gear :)

Yea people want pretty good money for the old 4 speeds, I gave $450 for mine, it was in good usable shape but I put new synchros and bearings in it

Just to give perspective. Just priced a complete 4 speed conversion from Passion and Brewers. Depending on the bell housing, an 18 spline package will cost between $5500-6800. All depends on how "correct" you want the finished product. Ouch.

If you have never done it, do not piece one together, one part incorrect will drive you insane.
How many guys on here know the pivot point on a bell housing is different between A, and B,E body's?
The part number on the bell is the same.
I have pieced one together in my Duster, maybe spent $1200 minus the clutch.
On my current project, I just bought a whole car for $2500 just for the 4-speed set up, it will be cheaper that way in the long run, taking all the parts off of the same car.
