Hi all, i'm sure this is a topic that comes up a lot but I am a first time engine builder and all of these valve spring specs are a mystery to me. The engine is a 360 magnum and i'll be running a roller cam with a max lift of .506". I know Hughes has a spring kit for these heads and they will be my fall back if the springs I want to use won't work. Those would be the Comp Cams #901-16, they have a dampner in them as well like the Hughes springs. From what I can find on the internet:
Installed Height - 1.650"
Seat pressure at installed height - 101lbs
Open Height - 1.250"
Open pressure - 242lbs
Od of outer spring - 1.494"
Id of outer spring - 1.080"
Spring rate - 353lbs/in

Sorry if this is a lot, just can't seem to wrap my head around what is necessary. On Comp's website these are listed under the mopar small blocks but wasn't quite sure if it would work. From what I can tell the specs are close to that of the Hughes.

I have same springs most likely going in my 340 build. They are currently in 273. I had same questions. Are your rockers 1.6 ratio?
I'll be watching and learning from this thread.

Whatever ratio the factory rocker arms are, I can't remember what they are.

5.9 Magnum - 901-16 springs are not correct. Stock springs will not work with that cam or any other cam bigger than stock. Hope this helps.

That .506 is that cam lobe lift or valve lift?
Valve lift = cam lobe lift X rocker ratio (1.5 or 1.6)

I know the stock springs won't springs won't work, looks like I'll be going with the Hughes springs. Any reason the comp springs won't work? If the diameters aren't an issue than would it be the pressure?

I look at the spring upgrade as cheap insurance, a failure could be catastrophic, and I know I would be out of the game for a while saving $ if I lost a motor.

That's not enough seat pressure. Springs are not something you "get away" with. They are either right or wrong. Make sure to get the correct springs.

I'm with RRR. That sounds low for springs load to me. No way I'm doing a roller with that little on the seat. My minimum is 140 on the seat.

Thanks for the responses, i’ve already decided to go with the hughes kit.
That would be wisest, as stated those are not the correct springs for Magnum heads, and even if You were running an LA 360 those Comp #'s would not handle that cam
lift-wise...........
