I've used polishing compound with success. Rubbing compound in severe cases. Both followed by wax.

So true...Always start with a lesser compound, "bite wise", if feels like it isn't cutting it, move up to something more aggressive, then finish off. This what I use for that purpose, but there are many more products out there.......
