Verifying # match on a 71 Duster.. Where can I locate the VIN stamps on the engine and auto trans from under the car? Are they visible? What other locations are vin#s located on the car.

Thanks. Does 71 also have a vin plate in the door jamb

Engine VIN is located on the passenger side right above the oil pan, transmission, drivers side right below the shift linkage on an auto. I have heard other VINs located on the body, such as radiator support, under the package tray and others places, but I think this has a lot to do with where the car was manufactured?

Yes it should. On the door itself. But, doors have been changed and those can be lost. Dash, fender tag, door, engine, trans, rad support, trunk lip are spots you would find partial or complete VIN stampings.

My 72 Duster has the trans VIN on the passenger side like the photo in the link I provided. The numbers on the driver side did not correspond.

doubtful you will have a vin on the trunk lip. its going to be on your speaker shelf. drivers side. (under your package tray obviously)

The door VIN for '71 is a Mylar sticker, not a tag.

Rear package tray for the rear body number for the Demons & Dusters.

The number on the drivers side case of automatic transmissions is the part number / application data, not the partial VIN.

Rear package tray for the rear body number for the Demons & Dusters.

Not always the case on the rear package tray. I have a couple of 71s that were never stamped on the package tray. I have seen a few 72s, same thing. After 73 it seems they got more consistent stamping them all.

Some cars may have gotten missed?

I have also seen some stamped so lightly that the factory paint layer covered them.

Did you find a rear number anywhere at all on those cars?

On a wagon related note Rani, I did hear this from a pal;

"The SO number is stamped on the sheet metal lip behind the rear bumper on my Lynch Road built 1964 Belvedere wagon."

The first confirmation I have heard of any wagon with a rear number & a location.

Maybe it started for the '64 model year?

Not sure yet. As with everything, research continues.
