I realize it's not an A body. Sorry.

Came into a '99 Sebring, 2.Something V6 automatic. First and reverse work ok. When it goes to shift into second... nothing, engine just freewheels.

If I stop, it doesn't want to go again until I run it in reverse for a minute. In first it seems to pull fine until it shifts.

Any ideas? Fluid level is correct, fluid seems clean and doesn't smell burnt. Should I even bother dropping the pan and looking, or is this trans probably junk?

Thanks for your tips and advice, I'm no transmission guy but I can pull a valve body and take it apart with out screwing it up too bad. Thanks again.
John

Chances are that it in limp mode, and is actually in 2nd gear. Is check engine light on? Get someone to read codes. They are known for input and output speed sensor failures, solenoid pack problems, and of course, internal problems. Codes and clutch volume index values help to diagnose properly

There’s that pesky roll pin thing that breaks inside the trans and galls the drum, making the trans useless. Maybe my brother “blu340dart” will chime in here, he knows all about those cars!

@blu340dart where are you?!? :)

Thank you for all replies! It pulls well in the gear it has, but I'm not used to V6s, so it may well be in 2nd. I'll pull the codes. I know it has them.

See if the cvi can be read. That will tell you if the trans has any life left. It could be solenoid, but more than likely it's trans rebuild time.
Had my share of A604 ( a sick oh four) issues.

Its either input or output sensor.....crappy tranny they all do this..change both..

If no check engine light or hard codes, watch the input and output speed sensors with the scanner. If they both show RPM.s when the car is moving it probably has an overdrive hub that is broken in the front of the transmission. They had some bad welds on them back then. I have rebuilt thousands of them. Could also be the underdrive/overdrive snap ring is broken too. Hell I think that transmission paid from my first house. It's an easy fix, but pulling it out without a lift would not be a fun day at all.
