I'm just about to order the lexan to get rid of the glass in my dart. The guy who sells it mentioned I may wanna call CHP and see if it legal to run on the street. Called CHP and it is definitely NOT legal on the street.

So anyone run lexan on the street in California? Have you ever been hassled about it?

Lots of stuff on my car is not street legal, race seats, 5 point harness, drag radials, exhaust and probably more but just wondering how serious the cops are about the lexan?

Thanks for your advice.

How much weight do you save going to lexan?

Keep in mind that it will yellow in the sun, and since it is so soft, it _will_ get scratches from running through clouds of bugs.

First they have to figure it out, just do a light tint they will never notice

Mar-resistant lexan is very scratch resistant, my friend raced late models and all the windows had this and a full season of racing and it holds up very well

I'm getting the scratch resistant and UV resistant lexan.

Oh they will notice I think. It will be held in with about 60 1/4-20 button head Allen's...

I understand it will be a wear item and needs to be replaced every so often.

Welcome to the Peoples Republic of California . I wonder what their objection is ? High impact, scratch resistant slightly tinted windows are as safe as OEM . I wouldn't put it on the front windshield , though . Every state has its issues . Here in New Hampshire rust is their biggest issue . Vehicle may be fine mechanically but can't have any rust bigger than a half dollar . don't need insurance either , don't require seat belt use either . Motorcycles riders don't need a helmet , but, bicycle, sled and atv riders need brain buckets . Go figure

Dark tinted windows are not legal on the street either, but there are plenty of cars with black windows on the road. Just like anything else, I bet you'll only be hassled if you drive like an asshole.

I ran them in my 68 post car, just the rear and vent windows and that was about the only thing the cops didn't harass me about. I have heard nice things about that Optic armor stuff and am thinking about that for my project.

In Va everything is illegal unless it was originally installed on the car. Aftermarket exhaust, window tint, lifting, lowering, aftermarket headlights and taillights yes everything lol. But basically unless you drive like a complete fool and do burnouts and bring attention to yourself the cops leave you alone. But once they get you once and and your on their radar your screwed. You might as well sell your car because its a small town and everyone knows everyone and the sec you pull out the cops are looking for you lol

Sounds like the town I grew up in lol. Best thing I ever added to my car was a stick on Jesus fish. I did it as a joke but I was never pulled over again, so I now have one on my 10 sec Dakota nd my new Valiant project lol.

Don't bother with the lexan for your street ride. IF you want to go faster, build more motor. My 2 cents

I always find it obvious because it's flat and not rounded. when you see a windshield that's flat and doesn't Contour to the rest of the body it becomes a little obvious. I thought about it but too much hassle replacement scratching I just paid the $200 for a new windshield and like it. a brand new windshield waighs quite a bit less than the original. Food for thought...

Some friends of mine spent time in Utah doing some things that were less than legal. They carried a book of mormon on the dash and were never hassled after that....

Also I have a cracked windshield so it needs to go to get on the track. For he cost of the windshield I can do almost the entire car.

When I look at lexan I don't remember it being very inexpensive?

Also when I called around town I got a massive variety in what people wanted to charge. Definitely worth calling around. The difference between $450 installed and $250 installed.

It's not but I got a friend who will sell it to me at cost.

Maybe I'll just do everything but the front and change that out with new glass.

I want to loose the windo regulators and cut most of the bracing out.

Ounces make pounds ya know.

I'll do all the install my self. I use to do auto glass when I was a kid.

Yeah but I've always been more of an "beg forgiveness VS ask permission" type.

:)
even when I had my window put in which is one of the two things I think I didn't do on the car myself. I didn't even have them put the sealant around the seal against the body because I still May paint the car one day and I definitely don't drive it in the rain.

A gasket windo dont require sealing if its installed right. They did not seal them from the factory.

What do you mean no rust, What do they make you do if you do have rust?

You can test it with compressed air and glass cleaner. Spray the cleaner around the inside of the gasket(inside the car) and hit the out side with compressed air from about 6 inches away. Any bubbles inside and it's a leak. That area can and should be sealed but if the pinchweld is good and the gasket did not get cut and the right gasket is used, it should not leak.

Folks screw up by using a gasket made for chrome trim and if the trim is not installed it will leak. The trim expands the gasket.

My gasket is expanded by the rope that they pressed into it..
