Not an a body, but my 98 1500 sport. 5.9 magnum and auto trans. The truck has 130k on it but runs good and is reliable as can be. Only problem that keeps bugging me is the transmission. When I take off from a stop, it goes ok if I baby it. If I go into the throttle a little more, it will slip. If I let off and get on it harder, it takes right off and quits slipping right away. Same thing when it shifts to second. If I'm very light on the throttle it shifts fine. If I'm trying to accelerate at less then 3/4 throttle,it will slip unless I let off, or give it more gas. Then it quits right away and takes off. It shifts smooth in all gears and 3rd and overdrive don't have the slipping problem. I changed fluid and filter about 5000 miles ago and adjusted kickdown cable. Didn't make any difference. Fluid has never been dark or smelled burnt and the pan was clean as a whistle. Any ideas on what this could be? Seems if the clutches were smoked it would of had some **** in the pan, or the fluid would have had the smell of death. Seems strange how getting into the throttle harder will make the slipping go away if it's in first, and if I hold it to the floor, it goes into second with no slipping at all. Not liking the idea of giving a transmission shop 2 grand if it's something I can fix myself. Thanks for any advice or suggestions guys. I always appreciate the help and glad to be part of a group of knowledgeable Mopar guys and gals

This is a long series, but will tell you everything you would ever want to know. Helped a friend do an AOD4E and he introduced me to these series.

Not an expert but the pressure solenoid and pressure sensor have caused me some issues before on a 99 Durango I had. I was told at that time to use Mopar components, guess due to variances in resistances in after market stuff. Also if I recall correctly the throttle position sensor plays a part in the shifting also. It’s easy enough to check if you have an analog style volt/ohm meter. Here’s a quick kind of troubleshooting guide on the transmission.

I also recall there being some issues when I was digging around for info on the Durango with the power train control modules failing. But those usually caused a check engine light. Not much help but maybe point you in a direction from my experiences.

Hey at this point I'll check anything I can if I can avoid pulling the trans for a rebuild. Thanks for the advice, I really do appreciate it

I'd check all the electrical components to make sure they are OK. Also, check the solenoid wiring harness connector. While you're checking these items, get yourself some electronic component cleaner and make sure all the connectors are clean. An ATRA seminar I once attended emphasized that where all connectors must be clean or they can/will build up an electrical resistance and the components will not function properly.

Does this sound like an electrical problem to you? I'm no trans expert, but it certainly doesn't act like any cooked transmission I've ever dealt with. The fact I can step down on the throttle and it stops slipping, or flooring it through the gears with no slipping makes it seem like a sensor or something. I ordered a governor pressure solenoid kit with the upgraded Borg Warner part to try

The very first thing would be a code check.
And that is correct that if it was actually slipping it would be burned, as it only takes a couple of seconds to fry a clutchpack.

It's been acting like this for quite awhile and the fluid still looks new. This is the only problem I've had with an electronic trans

I hooked my cheap code scanner up. The only codes I found were an O2 code

I agree it probably on it's way out, may have a seal internally leaking and not applying enough pressure to the clutch pack until you hammer it then it applies enough pressure to grab. You say the 02 sensor is bad? Are you sure the motor is not slightly falling over and making it seem like the tranny is slipping?

Does the same thing in reverse. Third and overdrive never seem to slip

Maybe check the adjustment of the kick down/2nd gear band. Check the adjustment to the throttle valve cable.

I'll adjust bands and tv cable when I put the governor solenoid in this weekend.
