quick question. how strong are ball and trunion type drive shafts? never had one before not sure I should run one. 65 barracuda, was 273 going to be 360. also how dependable are the cable shift 904s as well?

Ball & trunnion are o.k. up to a point . Street use o.k. Cable shift trannys are o.k. too . their problem is getting performance converters as the main shaft is one spline off . Converting them to later shafts is a bolt in , however. Sounds like fun

Ball and trunions are probably stronger, but the boot needs to be good or the grease will just sling out.

They were used behind Max Wedges and early 426 Hemi’s. They’re plenty strong enough

maybe I should just put the cable shift 904 back in. right now I am trying to get a 727 in there behind the 360, its a big no go in short

Exactly. Admittedly, it is a somewhat archaic design, but weak is one thing it is not.

Rebuild the 904 and install the larger diameter input shaft. You will also need to replace the pump. That way you can use a torque converter with the larger diameter crankshaft register that your 360 requires. The 904 has less parasitic inertia and will handle up to 500 hp with good components. 65'

If you flatten the pinchweld and do some judicious hammerwork on the tunnel, the 727 will barely fit.
