They don't filter much. Look at the size of the holes in the foam. I had one for a while, and found visible sand inside the carb.

I hear ya. The foam seems reasonably dense but I have no micron rating for it. There is possibly bypass happening around the filter too. For degradation, I will keep an eye on it. Will change it out in time if I can find a suitable quality low profile one. Only have around 2" and then I get into clearance issues.
