There are also switching regulator circuits that are an improved replacement for the LM7805 or similar linear regulator. A switching regulator is more efficient, so will not require a heatsink. They are more expensive at about $10. But about the same as buying parts and trying to build one correctly.

There are many more too. Just look for a 5V, 1A switching regulator.
