Alright, so I have an idea brewing. A question. Lets just "for example" use the Chrysler 7.25 rear axle as the example. The axles are 27 spline. Lets also for comparison's sake compare it to the Dana 30 that also has a 27 axle spline count. Since they both share the same spline count, are they the same diameter? I found the Dana 30 info, which is 1.13" in diameter, but no diameter info on the 7.25.

Spline count and the diameter at the splines aren’t the only considerations. The diameter at the wheel bearing is another thing to check, or whether you can get a wheel bearing of the correct the thickness and OD for the axle diameter. And then there’s the axle flange standoff, since they don’t use the same brakes the standoff may be different. Which would mean a complete brake swap might also be necessary.

IDK the answer but physically the spline count has nothing to do with diameter Rusty. The spline SIZE is the dominating factor.

Yes, I understand that, thanks. The axle bearing area is not a concern. All I am wondering about is the spline area. I am just wondering if the spline count and diameter are correlated. I'll have enough parts in a few days to find out for myself. Thanks man. I do appreciate your input.

Yes, I know that as well, but I am wondering if maybe there will be a "coincidence" in this case. lol Probably not.

The "for example" part threw me off a little. So you are being specific to the 7.25 vs. dana 30. I need to shut up now, lol

If your "idea" with the 7.25 axle diameter doesn't pan out, remember the 8.25 axle is also 27 spline and the axle diameter is the same as the Dana 30 (you can run a D30 Track loc in a 8.25 housing...) FWIW

That's "kinda" the direction I want to go with the 7.25".

Gotcha. Sorta what I thought. Sorry I can't help with the 7.25 axle dia... I don't have any to pull apart right now, but I think the 8.25 axles (and thus the D30) are bigger...

That would make sense......but stranger things have happened.

The early 7.25 has a 25 spline axle, not 27, so that's out. For now.
