Looking for my original 340 and 4-speed transmission out of my 1970 dart Swinger. Vin number OR328059. Should have a May 5th casting date on the block. Any information on the engine, transmission or paperwork would be greatly appreciated.

Based on other 340 Swinger build dates and VIN numbers, it was determined that it SHOULD be a May 5th casting date. It COULD be another date, as long as the VIN numbers are correct and the engine build numbers correspond it doesn't matter to me what the actual casting date turns out to be as long as it was cast BEFORE the car was built. I just figured by posting the presumed casting date it would make it easier for guys to check the numbers on their 340 blocks.

Don't assume the casting dates as blocks can be unloaded in many stations on the block machining line and then sit on a pallet until that operation becomes starved from upstream, then they load any blocks that they have sitting 'around' to keep the machine lines running... Casting dates can get mixed up real easy...

Like you said, it should be a casting date before your car was built... Not after...

May the 4th be with you...

(If the block was cast a day earlier than you predicted....) :D

Some casting dates are several months ahead of the cars actual build.

And about this;

Have you checked the registry on www.hamtramck-historical.com ? They have a list of 340 engines that have been found over the years.

I can only list items I have here in the office on the site. So far, no one has mailed any blocks in........
