Manual brakes are great if properly installed and maintained. I drove a restored 1972 nova a couple of years ago and I had to stand on the brakes to get it to stop. There are other forms of power brakes, vacuum operated are not the only ones out there. If the car I get has manual brakes I'll most likely leave it like that.
