I am upgrading my axles to 5x4 bolt pattern with 1/2" x20 wheel studs. I just purchased some second hand wheels, the rears have been run with 5/8 studs with an 11/16 shoulder.

Will it be safe for me to use open end shanked 1/2" lugnuts, with shank diameter of .6875"? I know the shank portion can not bottom out before the nut onto the washer. Will I need to have centric rings for the hub?

WHeels being hubcentric is never a bad thing.
I agree, this is somewhat of a unique scenario though. In my experience with 5/8" studs, the wheels are centered on the stud shoulder, not the hub. I wonder if this is safely replicated by using a shanked lug nut, with an OD that matches the ID of stud hole?

If the wheels have a 11/16 hole, and you are using a 11/16 shank mag lug (open or closed) your good. Billions of miles traveled that way. Hub centric is nice... but not necessary. People have used non-hub-centric mag wheels for at least 60 years.
Edit: open end shank lugs, so, long studs?
