Looking to get a set of Doug's D453B headers for by 67 Barracuda. Anyone have any experience with these headers, and in particular the ones with hi-temp black coating. I have two questions:

1. Does the hi temp black coated headers reduce heat in the engine boy (like ceramic coating headers).
2. Are the hi temp black coated headers hard wearing, does this coating burn / flake off?

It is paint! Depending on the quality of the prep, it will look good for a while but will need an occasional touchup.

Great headers. I don't have to cringe when I see a pothole now. I bought mine raw and painted them myself.

aaronk785, that's my biggest concern also. I have a set of Flowtech headers that I haven't installed yet, they look good but will hang down too low on the drivers side.

What did you use to paint the raw headers?
Is the finish any good?

VHT Flame Proof black header paint. Finish is good but much flater than 67 autocross finish. Really. By the time I bought the paint and primer I didn't save any money.

We have had them on our '66 a little over 2 years, it seems to wear better than I would have thought, but it does NOTHING to reduce the under hood temps.

Even the professionally applied ceramic coatings do not last. They all eventually rust through over time. So paint and powder coat will as well. You can help whatever coating you use to last as long as it can by using stainless hardware to attach the headers as well as anywhere above them, such as valve cover bolts and such. Rusty runnoff from anything above the headers will also compromise their finish over time. In the end, nothing will last forever. It's such a harsh environment, you can forget it.

I have 2 set of doug headers. I have a set of coated ones on my 73 duster that has a 360. They've been on the car for maybe 5 years now and still look good. I have another set on my wife's Ford Falcon. They are the black painted ones. They have been on the car since 2015. The paint overall is holding up very well. The passenger side header still looks decent. We had a master cylinder leak on the driver side at one point so the paint is whiteish looking instead of black in those spots. The paint overall hasn't worn or flaked off. Both cars are drag only cars so they don't get driven on the road or out in the elements that much.
