metallic paint technique ?

Ok so this weekend I laid some paint on the ol' duster and what do you know it is all stripy, like can see the strokes. I did the whole "overlapping" paint swipes but still too dark in some places (although shiny). not to mention I ran out of paint.... oooppss.

oh well, now my dilemma is do I switch to a solid color or "try" metallic again with no guarantees that it will look good.

how do I paint metallic colors with good results? can I just lay 2 gal of paint and have it look the same color or will technique (or lack there of) always give me a stripy look?

at least now I know what a nervous breakdown feels like :banghead:

or, Any suggestions on a nice solid blue? I thought I read somewhere on here that someone painted their car "speed Blue" from TCPGlobal..

one step forward and 10 stories straight down....
 
Single stage or basecoat/clearcoat system???

If it's single stage, they can be a real PITA sometimes depending on the color. I usually only do single stage for solid colors and BC/CC for all metallics. When you try to paint a single stage metallic you are sometimes fighting two competing requirements, coverage and gloss versus getting the metallic to lay down uniform without "tiger striping". That's the beauty of BC/CC, you can spray the basecoat in multiple coats, get coverage, and do a low pressure metallic equalizing coat last, then let it flash, and pound on the clear giving only consideration to coverage and gloss at that point. BC/CC will cost you more than single stage, but you get what you pay for.
 
The problem with single stage metalic is you can't color sand it so what you see is what you get. If you shoot base/clear you can sand your orange peel and trash out of the clear so that's a real bonus. If you are shooting base and tiger striping you may be putting it on too heavy, I don't want to say you dust base on because that's not right either but you don't pound it on like you would either single stage or clear. My gun speed is much faster with base than it is with clear.
 
You can always get around that by adding 1:1 clearcoat/single stage in some paint systems on the final coat. Pigments are heavier than clear, so the clear settles out on top and you can color sand and buff all the dirt nibs and peal that you want without effecting the metallics. But if you're going to do that you might as well have started out with a BC/CC system. I like to mix the clear on solid single stages though, it adds depth to the finish that you just can't get out of a straight BC/CC.
 
Relax, it can be fixed. I'll wait for the Bc/cc or single stage ? to be answered 1st. Before the horrible Options come. :read:

ok Sorry, should have mentioned that is was a single stage enamel... I had planned on clearing over it but ... now what.

Quick, I'm on my way to order more paint today..

The new plan is to repaint the whole car (would need to do it anyway) with solid color this weekend. If I put the order in today or tomorrow I can pick it up on friday so..

Apparently what I currently have is a very pretty guide coat :)

Blue carib....
