'73-'76 A-body disc brake orientation.

I haven't been able to find other cars to double check, but I'd like to know the correct disc brake caliper orientation on '73-'76 A-bodies. Is the caliper suppose to be located in front of the spindle or behind it?

My car has them behind the spindle. The problem is when I order the left side (driver), I get the right side (passenger) sideand visa-versa.

Was my car changed (spindles swapped?) or are the parts store part #'s wrong (Advanced Auto Parts)?
 
On my car they are in front of the spindle. They have been like this as long as I have had the car. Better place for cooling also.
 
Thanks. I kinda thought the parts stores would be correct. But I'll have to figure out why the previous owner swapped the parts from side-to-side, including the calipers, which ended up behind the spindle. However, the bleeder screws and hoses are still on top like they should be.
 
The factory position for the calipers on the 73-76 A-body is to the front. And, yes people swap the spindles and calipers so the caliper mounts to the rear for clearance on the 72 and earlier sway bar. However, some posted just recently that if you elminate the spacer betwen the bushings at the control arm the sway bar will be low enough to clear.

Also, if you ever need to replace the brake hose from the frame to the caliper the 73-76 hose is not long enough when the calipers are mounted to the rear. You will need to order an Aspen or Volare hose.
 
Being on a drag car, it certainly wasn't for sway bar clearance! The hoses are a bit stretched when the wheel is turned all the way even though I "tweaked" the metal tubes. But the F-body hoses will come in handy when replacing them.

I wonder if it was luck that mamopar made it so you can use either front or rear mounted calipers by having symetrical spindles. Just makes you wonder.
 
Most likely done to save inventory costs. It's always cheaper to inventory twice as many of one part that it is to have two different parts.
