Lost this bid in Ebay and the primary bidder turns out to be fraudulent.

Is this a decent price around 2k? It would have to be driven from Vancouver, I live about 300 miles away.

There is rust in the rear passenger area where there was a leak (see photo below) and you'll see in the ad that it's missing interior door panel on the driver's side.

Looks like a good deal to me, especially for a convertible.

Seller claims to have installed an engine and transmission from a '72 Dart. I don't see a shift lever, only pushbuttons which would not hook up to a '72 transmission. Additional detail needed.

Thanks, Dan. I've asked. I really like the look of these early 60s Valiants and Darts. Perhaps because I was born in '61? They aren't yet the muscle cars of the late 60s and retain some of the 50s styling.

I'm still on the fence, my heart says yes but my head says wait until I can spend 3-4k more for a vehicle in better condition. I don't want a show car but just one I can keep regular maintenance on and drive around regularly (once or twice a week) in Portland. Seems like 5k-6k or so is the sweet spot for one that's not great but a good runner.

don't have a garage either which worries me with a car like this.

I'd say no way to 2k. He was probably hoping you'd outbid his shill bid. That car looks rough, I'd say $1500 tops if it's not rusty.

300 miles isn't that far away I would take a trip to go look at it in person before he re list's it on ebay

I guess the only way to know for sure if the seller is honest is to go look at it. Dan has a good point about the transmission. I didn't notice that there was no shifter visible. $2000 doesn't sound too bad to me if the body is good and it runs well, but out on the West Coast cars with little or no rust are a lot easier to find and are not priced as high as in other parts of the country. Not having a garage might be a good reason to pass on this one. A convertible with a leaky top is not a car that you want to have sitting out in the rain.

You guys have been really helpful, thanks. I keep thinking I should pass but my wife knows how long I've liked these cars, we have the resources, it's not far away ... (DDodge, I would just put a cover on it during rain season).

I have figured out the tranny, he had a mechanic put in just the newer engine ('72 Dart) not the tranny. He offered me the tranny as well found a local 64 Valiant that is going to be junked. I get the strong sense that this guy is just looking for a good owner. He is throwing in a new (black) rag top for instance and some other parts.

I am going to send an email asking for this:

1) I need to be able to take the car on an hour long road test the car including 55 mph on the highway for 15 minutes

2) I need to be able to look at the rust in the back and look at the trunk.

3) I need to take it to a mechanic in Vancouver and have it tuned up and certified road ready.

And if all this passes, I'll pay the 2 grand and drive it home. IF he says I am a big hassle, which I probably am, then he holds it. And I maybe wait a few years and look for a Valiant or Dart same vintage and spend a few K more for one in more solid shape.

Good luck, and keep us posted on how it turns out. By the way, a cheap portable garage is much better than a cover. The cover traps moisture under it and might do more harm than good.

Well after my list of asks, the guy decided not to sell. I think this is OK. He clearly had his heart set on the car anyway and when I was ambivalent, I think it turned him around to just keeping it.

I learned a whole lot about the cars I want, and I'm still stuck on a 60-65 Dart or Valiant with the push button transmission, and a convert if I can get it.

Hey, life's short. I'll keep haunting this board!

I'd pay a grand for those seats!!! those are EXACTLY what i want!

I have figured out the tranny, he had a mechanic put in just the newer engine ('72 Dart) not the tranny.

Uh-huh...that raises two questions

1. Did his mechanic put in the necessary 1/8" adaptor ring between the '68-up slant-6 crankshaft and the '67-down torque converter? If not, the transission's front pump bearing and seal are on the way OUT.

2. Why did he say the transmission was replaced if it wasn't?

Dan, no idea. You guys are out of my league! And tmj, definitely, the interior almost sold me. Maybe I should have just headed on up and driven it first but out of town this week and I wanted to be honest with the guy.
