    Is it cold? Until summer air - my 66 runs like junk until it is fully warmed up and had been running for 45 mins or so. Winter fuel also has less let’s say “incentive” on these let say, “carburated” engines

    Sounds silly, but have you lubricated the linkage and checked the fluid level in the transmission? Also, after all these years- there is going to be a bit of play. Too much and shifting is tough. Also, check clutch adjustment - if the input shaft is still spinning it can cause shifting issues...

    Second that- just go slow and don’t let the drill go too deep- use a drill stop of some sort. Easy as eating pie.
