    Who would have ever thought

Guess I just had low expectations. I built the avatar (408) street/strip car with a target of 11.30. After a bunch of tuning, I got it from its initial pass at 11.87 to now it's gone [email protected]. And I've been happy with that! (OK, ok...now I want to see a 10.9x out of it but that may never...

New carb finally arrived, with pic

Don - my $0.02.... On my 408, I have an old Diamondback/Holley 850 carb. I've played around with jets and have been running 81/87's for some time now (has a power valve in the front). I recently had a thread going looking at my plugs and my overall conclusion from the discussion, as well as...

    Starter heat issue?

My avatar has a 408 with a mini-starter (I assume that is a mini-starter you have.) The Hooker SuperComp headers (1-3/4") run fairly close to it. This is its 3rd summer and so far, no issues. I'd run it as is if that's a mini-starter. As for the pinion gear hanging up, you want to get that...

Solid rollers with off set push rod hole issue.

Assuming valve springs are set up the same, spalling on the intake only suggests it's an issue of the larger forces involved due to the heavier intake valve. I doubt the heat treat or core is any different intake vs exhaust so we're back to an insufficient heat treat or material for the...

How many of you grease your own trailer axles?

I'm with you. I've hand-packed the bearings on my flat trailer since I bought it used in 1986. Never had an issue with it. Now with my enclosed hauler, I've used the EZ-Lube method for the first greasing and will likely hand pack them when they're ready for the 2nd greasing. I figure I'll...

How many of you grease your own trailer axles?

I've got EZ lube hubs on my enclosed car hauler trailer and just greased them for the 1st time at about 6800 miles. It took quite a bit of grease this 1st time as you're filling up the hub cavity when you do it. And these are 6000# axles so they have the bigger bearings and hubs. Roughly 1...

    Tips for the track?

Just a guess but most tracks will (rightfully) insist on an overflow bottle. On a temporary basis, any type of old plastic bottle may suffice. That is IF tech even lifts the hood like they should. Oh, and double throttle return springs are in EVERYBODY'S best interest!

    Alignment Help

I should have added that, like your car, my avatar has the fully adjustable SPC UCA's so doing this at home is quite the necessity to me. And by having the gauge magnetically attach to the hub as I noted in my post above, repeatable results were quite easy once I got the knack of how to adjust...

    Tips for the track?

Most importantly, go over your safety checklist: wheel nuts torqued, suspension bolts tight, fire extinguisher in car, oil level full, etc, etc. Go get'm and have a blast!!

    Alignment Help

I have a Joe's Racing caster/camber gauge. The avatar has Weld ProStar wheels. All I have to do is remove the center caps then the dust caps and the gauge magnetically attaches to the hub without issue. For turning plates, this hack uses heavy, thick garbage bags folded over multiple times...

Solid rollers with off set push rod hole issue.

Can't tell exactly if that damage is on the nose of the cam or the front or back side. From the pic, it looks like what we would call spalling which is due to excessive Hertz stresses from too much spring pressure for the material and/or incorrect or insufficiant heat treat. For example, iron...

    More nonsense from NHRA Tech

I've had my car at 5 different tracks. Only 1 has ever done any meaningful tech inspection (little track in Michigan called Lapeer International Dragway - cudos to them!). All others (names withheld) have never even asked me to lift the hood!! So not even a simple check to insure at least...

What battery are you using in your trunk also push pull turn off.

I use an Optima red top in the avatar's trunk. For the disconnect, I use a rotary switch in the trunk latch key hole. I have a pull cable in the LH rear pass seat area to pop the trunk latch.

Yes, and the REAL problem is nobody runs all the tests to determine what these old engines really require given all of the mods done to them by each of us!
