How many of you grease your own trailer axles?

Need to watch how hard you backhand them. You could hurt your knuckles. :-) Just my goofy sense of humous getting out. That is what I do as well. 2 hours driving max and it is time to get out and stretch the legs, so checking tire and bearing temps, tiedown straps and lights is a good idea...

I hate chinesium socks as they wear holes way too fast. They get a verbal darn way faster than it is possible to do the mend darn. I really do not trust Chinesium skivies. After the lead paint children's toys and melanine in milk BS, I have no faith in what may be in the dyes. The C19 load of...

How many of you grease your own trailer axles?

Most 1/2 trucks and cars use splash lube gear oil to the bearings. Those trucks are all built with full floating axles like the big boys. The older Fords with the 9" used sealed bearings with the bearings pressed on the axle.

Ex stepdaughter would break a glass or bowl and respond "**** happens". Drove me nuts when the ex bought glass bowls and her daughter broke all six in 6 days nuking eggs to make an egger sandwich for breakfast. You would have thought after the first 2 she would have caught on but nope. ****...

Yes you did. And after looking at the other comments and the information given by the OP, I believe you are correct.

An F1 piston, one stinking piston costs $50,000. I do not own a vehicle worth that much, and do not envision ever spending that on a vehicle if I could afford it.

Dan is a young guy and most likely on a tight budget looking for a decent running street car he can enjoy. That is where my recommendation comes from. The race car can come later. I take information from a bunch of sources and look for some common ground and what seems to make sense. Not...

Knowing a bit about the 318 engines, I would highly recommend switching the cam first. This is the carrot in the engines arse. A 360 cam or an aftermarket cam with about 210° to 215° intake duration at 0.050" lifter lift and about 220° exhaust duration at 0.050", 108° LSA installed 4° advanced...

Works on semis with the 10s of thousands of miles they put on in a year. We had a couple that both drove their Freightshaker, 100k in 4 months. There was a few others that were similar.

That is up to him. I have generally pretty good patience. If he does apply what he can learn here, he should end up with a lot of mechanical knowledge and a car that runs well.

That is the cost of the pistons and rings through Summit. Remember we get hosed for the $ exchange at 1.4 these days and our prime peckerhead spashing money around to appear as a world savior is only getting us deeper in debt which eventually sink our $ more. I already have most of the stuff for...

Yes 1/16" are falling into the obsolete bin. 1.2mm, 0.043", 1mm are fairly common. Lake Speed was talking about 0.9mm rings. All depends on piston availabilty and budget. I expect Dan will be on a fairly tight budget. His asking questions here is good as he can bounce ideas around to find out...

    Pistons

Depends, and that is not the ones DJT gets at Walmart. Look around at say Summit for pistons with the top design and compression height in the bore size you need. 1/16" are fairly common if you look.

Finding the appropriate pistons and rings for the intended use and budget is where the bannana peel hits the sidewalk. Sometimes availability trips us up and usually the budget whacks us upside the head.

Well, IMHO you both have points. The 5/64" ring sets have been in use for decades now and are well proven. If they work for you and you are happy with using them, have at it and carry on. Modern technology and materials has enabled the ring widths to be reduced for lower friction in the engine...

The piston manufacturer will give a piston skirt clearance specification with a height up the skirt to measure the diameter. The machinist will hone for proper fit of the pistons. When that is completed you or whomever is assembling your engine will gently slide a ring into a cylinder and...

Solid rollers with off set push rod hole issue.

Boosted you normally need more spring force to offset the boost pressure working to blow the intake valves open. Boost pressure × valve head effective area gives pounds force on the valve head. Remember the stem diameter area can be deducted from the valve head area. This pounds force is added...

Solid rollers with off set push rod hole issue.

I would venture that the 0.0028"lifter clearance with the offset lifters is causing the lifter to tip in the bore. This will put extreme load on the contact area of the lifter roller and cam lobe on the opening ramp. The spauling is metal fatigue from the extreme contact point pounds (tons) of...

Solid rollers with off set push rod hole issue.

Is the cam bearing bores completely paralell vertically and horizontally to the main bearing bores? Are the bushed lifter bores completely perpendicular to the camshaft? A fellow had a real nice Mercury Cyclone with a 429. He had the cam tunnel bored to use the roller cam journal bearings with a...

2 to 4 pumps should be enough. The grease in the cap that you just pumped in will melt and flow through the outer bearings and top up the grease well in the hub. Grease will flow into the inner bearings. I personally prefer to remove the hubs, clean and repack the bearings by hand. Fill the...

How many of you grease your own trailer axles?

Did you pull the hubs off to clean and repack the bearings and relace the axle seals, or do you have dust caps with grease fittings? I do not like the grease fittings. If you pumped a full grease tube in each hub, they are totally full. There is a grease well in the center of each hub that holds...

Yes, a pissed off Canuk. Turdo is breaking us. I am kind of half way between Edmomton and Grand Prairie. Both about 1.75 hours with Edmonton having greater selection. Red Deer is 3 to 3.5 hours. So for me keeping the revs lower is a big factor. Living in southern Ontario with the population is...

Not sure about more, but they can take a lot. The advantage for retrofit in other vehicles is the small external dimensions so they fit without floor modifications in most cases. First gear is more like 2.74 while the 700 has 3.07 first. Both much improvement over a 2.45 first. Add a bit of...

To fit the higher ratio (smaller number) gears, the flange on the carrier is moved over a bit. This gives room for the larger diameter pinion gear required. The ring gears are also machined specifically for the application, so they do not interchange. I suppose you could make a spacer to use the...

The Exploders came with 31 spline axles. The Mustangs generally had 28 spline. Rangers with the 4 noise maker probably had a 7.25" and 28 spline axles. With the 4.0 V6 they probably have a 8.8" with 28 spline axles. Rangers are narrower than the Exploder and Mustang.

Just Scody playing mind games with the terminology. Many names used. Each division had its own name for a differential that supplied torque to both wheels. What you might want to look for is a Dakota 8.25" with disc brakes and the Mopar flavor of a positive traction carrier. If it is a bit...

A good option but possibly a bit expensive. But then any option for an OD gear is going to hit the wallet. Anything that requires cutting the floor is a big pain as the carpet then requires replacement with a custom piece.

I believe I mentioned that with resect to towing and manually downshifting. I also mentioned the balance of street, highway and race use. Personal preferance is also a big consideration. What one person finds tollerable or desirable, another would find totally annoying. For an A body car I...
