Yup they did come both ways in 78. My 78 fury (very early build in 9-77) had a non lockup 904 that still has a converter drain plug

motor wont matter. even w/a v8 the back of the trans sits exactly in the same spot.

Yeah. B 200 and 300 means 70s.back then I believe all the vans had 727s. My b250 was an 87. 3/4 ton 5 lug 9-1/4 rear. Window van. 904. My dad had an 86 b250 conversion at the same time and his was 8-1/4 rear. Also 904 ( or 998/999 maybe) Around that time I was seeing a lot of b vans with 8-1/4s.

When I rebuilt the 42re version of the a500 in the 99 Dakota I used to have I replaced the front servo and the accumulator while it was out. I basically pulled it out to just "fix the problem" and put it back in, I never pulled the planetaries or sun gear, rear drum and band out while I had it...

I've seen replacement seperate plates available. Sonnax I believe has stock ones. I know that back in the 80s when I did my 1st shift kit I chose a B&M and it came with one that was slightly modified but it's been too long ago to remember exactly how. Id also check with trans parts suppliers...

Plus a fresh converter, never want to rebuild a trans and put the old converter back in. And any upgrades you're wanting to add ... And that $100-125 kit doesn't include bands.... When I did my first auto trans, the kits used to come with a front band.

Valve body cracked? Can't say I've seen/heard of that one before. Worn out bores where the valves ride? Wrongly modified? Parts lost? Oh yeah.

Got a related question about these transmissions When they changed the naming system from "a500" to "42/44RH" what would be the differences within, between them? Would the 44 have more clutches and Steels than the 42 version, more planetaries, what?
