My mind has a growing interest in my 383....

I believe they actually wanted to standardize the BB bore. 4.32 like the 440. That would have made the 383 a 396 which would have been awesome to compete with the Chevy guys. However, marketing thought 400 sounded better so 4.34 bore it was. But just maybe somebody on the inside messed up...

I wonder why the exact reason(s) they ditched the 383 and went to the 400? I know the petro embargo and all, but the 400 wasn't about mpg. I can't imagine they thought it would be better for the EPA. Why?

You could have not possibly have got that out of what he wrote. Plainly he was speaking of factory stock from the dealership. Nowhere did he say with all that added it would go 15's. Plainly his point was a 383HP 4 speed from the factory running high 14's to low 15's was an underachievement...

But then on the NExT intake swap, you'll spend and extra hour with crowbars getting it loose ???? :D

I agree with the external balancing, wish they were internal balanced. As for the cast crank, no sweating that. People going 450-500 hp for years and never hurt the crank. Some have taken the cast cranks to 9's in the 1/4 without failure.

LOL... I'll run those numbers with the factory 360 dished pistons and smog heads. In fact, I was 13.9's at 3450 (3650 at the line) with 2.45's, no headers and the dished piston 360. Again, just trying to see how 66fs did his measuring to basically dog the 360 as such an underperformer. Not...

Just curious.... What would you expect a good running stock 383 in a '68 satellite @3600 lbs to run with 3.23's in the 1/4 mile? I just really want to know what your true expectations would be. Thanks

Factory 360 2bbl is a better platform than a factory 361 2bbl.

I drove one 361 in a '61 Dodge. To be honest, it was pretty gutless. A 360 in a C-body would have eat'n it's lunch.

Yeah, I need to. I know folks that had them of course, I've rode in them, but I've not myself in a A-body. And, I'd expect a BB not to need 4.10's in a light car.

Then I threw a 200,000 mile 360 mag with a oregon regrind and a speedmaster intake in our Long Bed D150 and went 13.0's against a head wind in it's only time out to run the 1/4 mile. I think with no head wind it goes 12.9's. It does have 4.30 gears. This in no wise means I like a 383 any...

I've never had a 383 in a A-body. Maybe it's time. I do know I've owned A-bodies with 360's, and it's almost next to impossible from my experience to keep them out of 13's. Any minor upgrades and it's 12's. Can you believe I ran 13.9's with a 2.45 geared, stock converter, and stock exhaust...

I took it that he meant if both engines built the same for comparison.... kind of equal builds per say.

This 360 is at 325,400 miles and still going..... :lol:

And that's the whole idea... not that anyone is wrong or right. It's really what each person prefers. There are 50 reasons to choose one or the other. Personal preference is what I was really after :)

I know you know this, but the small block's have 4 more bolts, coolant, top radiator hose, bypass hose, and I've never had a problem re-using the intake gaskets on the BB's. I like both engines, but this is just a fact. Yes, I agree, the distributor is in the way on a BB vs SB, but when...

Wonder what the max HP that can be pushed through a stock block 383 and 360 ? 383 is noted for having the webbing and the stronger block vs any SBM.

Mid 90's Vipers (1996 per say)... 12.3 @ 116. No modern-day Hemi, just an extended 360!! :D. Faster than any factory 383 or 440 car made before 1970. :lol: your sure fun :D
