    Nicks Garage 383 build

Unported 906’s with SBI replacement valves, good valve job with bowl cut, milled to about 77cc, dual springs. Flowed low-230’s. TRW pistons at +.020, with flycuts, steel shim gaskets, stock rods, stock cast crank from a 400(still externally balanced). Comp SFT, 256/262-106, isky rockers, RPM...

    Nicks Garage 383 build

When you’ve done enough to a 383 to make a big improvement in power from stock, the factory 301 intake is a pretty noticeable cork. When I tested that on mine in 2002 I think it was like 35-40hp better with an RPM. But I was already in the 420hp range with the stock intake(big SFT cam, headers...

    Nicks Garage 383 build

FWIW, I don’t mind 383’s at all. The few I’ve built have turned out pretty well imo. My view on a stock type rebuild is this……. You’re not really serious about wanting power if you’re not willing to upgrade the main items that are holding your particular combo back. In most cases that means an...

    Manley Pushrods 25339-8

Based on the pic in the catalog, showing a cutaway of all the pushrods in that series, they’re oil thru. For non-oiling pushrods like that, you’re more than likely going to need something from Smith Bros, Manton, or Trend.

    Pressure Recovery in CC

I don’t know if that’s an issue with your head, but I have reworked a chamber too much and had that happen.

    Pressure Recovery in CC

Were you planning on mapping the flow as it exits the valve from the chamber side like you’ve done before? Be interesting to see if the dead areas changed at all.

    440 Roller Cam suggestions

Something along the lines of a Howard’s 723515-12 would meet your requirements. The availability question could come down to whether or not they have a core(a blank) small enough to facilitate that grind. Edit- actually……they’re in stock at summit.

    How much dyno corrected HP?

What’s worked reasonably well for me is- With the caveats that how good the “car” is(which is everything except the engine), is a huge factor……… If the dyno numbers are legit, and you’re racing at tracks that aren’t at high elevations(call it less than about 1000ft), in “reasonable” air...

    Help identifying Racer Brown camshaft

It’s not a “little” different. If its a hemi cam, the lobe arrangement difference is obvious.

    Help identifying Racer Brown camshaft

The difference between a wedge cam and hemi cam is the lobe positioning for 1/2 the lobes. If you lay a wedge and hemi cam next to each other and have it so the dowel pins are both in the same position(like at 12 o’clock), then look at the direction the lobes are pointing, they will be...

    Tires make a HUGE difference!

I didn’t put it together that there were 2 runs displayed(duh). I was looking at the 2.24 I think you should be solidly in the 12’s now.

    Tires make a HUGE difference!

The speed is enough to put you well into the 12’s. 60’ needs a bit of work though.

Some dyno testing you guys may want to follow on YouTube

...on a build like that? The one set of cnc’d SBM SM’s I had here had a valve job I didn’t love. Cnc’d pretty much right to the 45, and then a 0* top angle. Looking at the flow numbers in the SBM head thread it appears the prepped/blended unported version out flowed the cnc’d/as from SM...

Some dyno testing you guys may want to follow on YouTube

Pretty substantial difference …….. especially at that power level. If you built the SM combo, what are you going to buy with the $700 you saved to get back the missing 40tq/30hp? I agree it would be interesting to see how a set of “prepped/blended” SM’s would stack up.

If the stroke is now 3.54”, then they added .160” stroke. If the pistons are 1.485” C/H, and the rod is 6.70”, the pistons should be down the hole .025”(in an uncut block) 1.770”(half stroke) 1.485” 6.70” ———— 9.955” .025” deck ———— 9.980”
