    Spark Plug

Idle timing is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too low. As a test/trial, try advancing to 30-35*. Rpm will increase, idle will be smoother & more vac.

    Spark Plug

It depends what the engine was doing just before the plugs were pulled. Was it idling? That could explain the carbon, while at cruise the A/F might be correct. Alum heads? Use NGK 4s.

Inner fender removal for weight reduction?

The inner fender on Chrys A bodies is a structural member & acts as a brace/support for the K member....which takes the engine & suspension weight. I would not remove it.

Valve seals tore on break in

There is NOTHING wrong with those seals! When installed correctly they work EVERY time. And the garter spring? It is a great idea because as the seal wears, it keeps tension on the stem to prevent oil use. [1] You need to pre-oil the stem & seal [ not WD40, it dries out quickly ] [2] You need...

    Roller Rocker Side Clearance

With roller rockers, you should be centering the roller tip on the valve stem. Stock rockers have a veeeeery wide footprint & have plenty of leeway. Not so with a narrow roller tip. Get the tip centered, THEN use shims to position the rocker. You do not need a lot of side clearance, 0.005" each...

Valve seals tore on break in

[1] Were the stems/seals pre-lubed? [2] Could they be 11/32" valve seals, BB uses 3/8" valves?

    Cam duration question

That cam is going to have a lumpy idle, low idle vacuum. Carb & ign timing will have to be 'tuned' to work with it. If you are just building a cruiser, there are better cams to choose from. Read this warning from Erson cams:

    Cam thrust button

The gasket would be close to 0.045", so delete that. Use silicon to seal the cover. The last time I used a gasket on a t/chain cover was 1982...or was it 1983....

440 source ductile adjustable rocker arms.

    440 Cam selection help

^^^^^^ Agree. The stamped rockers are pretty stout. Years ago, I mocked up a test rig to see how much they flexed under load. Cannot remember the actual numbers, but there was no flexing that I could measure.

    440 Cam selection help

Fish, It sounds like you just want a good all round performance engine. Some of your ideas are veeeeeeeeeeeeery sensible: like having your factory lifters re-faced. I would not use a re-ground factory cam on a tight LSA. The factory cams were ground on wide LSAs. To tighten the LSA [ a...

    440 head gasket question.

Do not agree. The holes were added to later versions of the head. Why would that be added if they served no purpose?

    What causes "cam walk"?

The timing chain has nothing to do with cam walk. The rearward cam thrust is created by the load of the oil pump! The direction of the helical gears on the cam/pump drive want to drive the cam backwards when the pump starts pumping oil....which should be always. The lifter offset is designed to...

    What causes "cam walk"?

^^^^ This looks like what I did in post #13. I made the spacer thickness so that it just kissed the back of the w/pump housing. I also had to make an extension for the button to get the 0.005" endplay correct.
  22. B

    What causes "cam walk"?

Sounds like the button came apart & the rest was collateral damage. I use the stock timing chain cover. The space between the rear of the w/pump housing & the TC cover where the button is: I make a spacer that is a snug fit, push it into place & secure with silicon.

    Thermoquad question

Never use a 4 hole gasket....with a 2 hole intake. It is not the vacuum you need to worry about, it is a backfire....... Make sure the gasket covers the passages in the carb base.
