    318 Poly Flow Test

Port volume is not the answer all the time. Flow velocity and energy density are more important. These provide cylinder ram filling before the intake valve closes as the piston is rising.

    318 Poly Flow Test

What is the springs installed height. The 1.88" Magnum valves could probably be installed easy enough. For low cost the LS 1.9" intake could also be employed. Get the GM powdered metal guides or bronze. If the installed height is about 1.8" the LS beehive springs, retainers and keepers can be used.

CNC Mill Mark Removal in Intake Port

According to David Vizard, surface finish is not as important as the port shape and efficiency. You need to exercise caution on port volume as a larger volume creates a lazy port flow. Flow rate and the energy areof vital importance to cylinder filling. Habit of a rough surface causes surface...

How much would you pay for this 340?

Pull both valve covers and the oil pan for a look. You may want to remove a main cap and rod cap to check for signs of bearing damage and crap in the bearings. Look for metal flake in the pan. In the valve covers look for undue rust, broken spring or a dropped valve. Many engines have been sold...

The man wants MORE caster. How about this idea?

What is your intent for the car? 1 1/8 negative camber is a lot unless road racing or slalom. IMHO, 5° caster max should be good. Again depending on the intended use.

I do not run my own shop, but seen the BS from the clowns. You are correct that a piece of paper is not 100% protection, but it does help. When someone wants high compression and boost, it is time to show them the door as they will be trouble every time. Let them build the bomb themselves.

    Nicks Garage 383 build

If you give a customer a little more power than they expected for the agreed price you will never get complaints, as long as that bit more is not at the expense of fuel economy.

    Nicks Garage 383 build

With Nick's Garage he seems to specialize in restorations. As such the dyno time is checking leaks and tuning to make sure it runs perfectly when installed in the chassis. Yes he fusses with the engines, finds problems and cures those.

That is the situation where you get it in writing what the customer wants. The more performance they expect, the more the invoice will be. Lay it out in writing and get it signed these days. Years ago you had gentlemen's agreements where it was discussed, agreed on with a hand shake. Today is a...

    Nicks Garage 383 build

You have that right Rusty, some just cost more than others. To a previous post regarding a 383 Mopar or 383Chev, depends on what your application is. As I mention, many motorhomes were built on Dodge chassis with 383 power. A 383 Chev can make the same power as an equivalent Mopar. That said...

    Nicks Garage 383 build

A lot of 383 engines used in Dodge chassis motor homes. If it can pull a 35' motor home through the mountains of the Canadian Rockies or against a prairie headwind, with all the frontal area and weight, they were a pretty good engine. Maybe not to everyone's standard, but a good reliable engine.

2017 ram 2500 broken manifold bolts

I the manifold is resting against the bolt when it is tightened, expansion and contraction of the cast manifold can cause the shear force. Another related to shear is the bending force as the bolt head sticks by friction and the clamp load. As the manifold expands and contracts, it slides...

2017 ram 2500 broken manifold bolts

Two qualities to discuss; tensile and shear. As the bolt grade increases the tensile strength increases through chemistry and heat treatment. This increased tensile strength provides higher clamping load, but at a cost, Shear strength. A gr 8 bolt will break in shear while a gr 5 or gr 2 bolt...

2017 ram 2500 broken manifold bolts

Yes, the washers are like ththick Belleville washers and appeared to me to be of a hardened construction. The Chev 'liners had similar washers. Everything engineered over the last 30 to 40 years has used metric measurements. Stepping up from the 5/16" or 8mm bolt or stud size to 9mm would be a...

2017 ram 2500 broken manifold bolts

Youse is overthinking da sityatun. Why do you introduce Gr 8 bolts? 9mm 8.8, 10mm 8.8 or 3/8 grade 5 bolts would be fine. IMHO the breakage is not from tension expansion of the manifold. Those bolts get plenty warm through heat convection from the bolt head in contact with the manifold. My...

2017 ram 2500 broken manifold bolts

Back to the bean counters again. If they can save 1/10,000th of a cent per bolt times millions of exhaust manifold bolts per year, the bean counter justifies his/her position.

2017 ram 2500 broken manifold bolts

Like every proffesion, some are more competant than others, but are far from half wits. The problem these days is the bean counters are looking to keep every cent they can, so excellent designs get sent back to shave some happy cabbage off. I do not think the engineers are happy about it, but...

2017 ram 2500 broken manifold bolts

You have to be careful reducing bolt torque. Bolt torque is a method to determine and set bolt stretch in a blind hole. This stretch keeps the bolt from loosening and coming out. It works like lock washers do. You are correct 19DART66 in that there are 3 different expansion rates to consider...

Worked there for a bit and got along well with the parts people. That said, you may be correct. The service manager is a total dick, and I am not the only one to say that. I know Ram owners who drive an hour to get their trucks serviced or repaired, just to not deal with him. I went to a wrecker...

2017 ram 2500 broken manifold bolts

Yes Rusty, that is stupid. OEMs in their quest to save weight and money pretty much all went to 8mm exhaust manifold bolts. The General has a problem with the LS and 3.6 V6 breaking the exhaust manifold bolts. Drill and tap for 3/8" UNC or 10mm would likely cure the problem. Weight per vehicle...

    Adjustment for positive Camber?

What is your intent and how much +camber do you have now? If you intend to slalom or track day with the car you probably want a heavy duty antiroll bar with about 3° negative camber and 5° caster. For a street driver your best bet is to follow factory specs. Seems to me this is a situation to...
