    Spark Plug Advice Needed

RRR, I will tell you why you do IDLE TIMING first..... You bolt on your carb, factory 12* of initial timing. You find the mixture screws are not adjusting the mixture; you are able to screw them all the way in...& engine still runs. You remove the carb & find too much transfer slot is exposed...

On resistor spark plugs. Circle Track tested about 10-12 heli-wound plug wires that had different ohms per foot. The test was to see if resistance affected the hp. There was a small HP difference between the best & the worst, & the winner did NOT have the lowest resistance. That is likely due to...

Turk, Go back to sleep. You haven't got a clue, couldn't drive out of sight on a dark night.... My GTO & hundreds of thousands of other Pontiacs idled on the showroom floor with a tiny 197/212 @ 050 cam....& 10.7:1 CR....with 26*. The car makers need to be conservative because they do not know...

    Lifter failure

Dave, The FT lifter problem was never there prior to the mid 90s when manufacture moved out of the USA... Also, back 'in the day', we didn't have to remove inner springs for break in. Pontiac engines came from the factory with dual springs. They didn't remove the springs from 000s of engines...

    Spark Plug Advice Needed

A few people are saying fix the carb first. They are 100% wrong. Timing at idle [ & more if IT BIS needed ] IS NOT A BANDAID. What it shows is that folks do not understand what is going on in the cylinders...at idle!!! At idle, the air entering the engine is throttled [ almost closed t/blades...

OP, The Isky E-4 cam only part # is 390144. That comes from an Iskt Catalog [ remember them.....]. Do NOT buy new lifters unless you want to risk lobe/lifter failure. Instead, have your factory lifters re-faced.

    Any Pertronix experts here?

Extra resistance might make the module 'happier' but it also reduces coil current & voltage; could result in weak spark or no spark.

383 knock goes away on warmup

Most likely piston slap. Wrist pin noise [ worn pin &/or pin bore ] gives a double tap. As long as the rest of the ign curve is altered to suit, running 20* initial is a good idea. Engine will run cooler, use less fuel & have better tip in response. The GM LS engines have a very good...

Dan, That book is David Vizard's How to Tune Holleys, CarTech SA216. Ign timing in a Carb book? And ign timing mentioned several times? That is because DV gets the relationship between idle timing & carb idle setting. Many do not get it...... Idle timing is done first before touching the...

360 stalls on deceleration from throttle blip

You can set your idle rpm as low as you like, as long as these conditions are met: - if auto trans, engine doesn't stall or become 'edgy' when put into gear - doesn't stall when braking. Obviously keeping idle rpm as low as practicable saves fuel & saves wear/tear going into gear on auto trans car.

    Lifter failure

New FT lifters are a 'crap shoot' as my American friends say. If you are not into crap shooting, get some 30 yr old lifters re-faced. The Crower Cam saver lifters with a groove down the side. I have been doing the same for 30 yrs with a Dremel. No need to pay extra for it, you can do it with...

Yes, NGK 5 heat range would be best. Using Manifold connected Vacuum Advance [ MVA ]. A reallllllllly good idea with that cam. But you have to get it [ idling timing ] right first. You adjust the carb last. This is how you do it. Disconnect & plug the VA. Engine idling, in gear if auto...
