    Guns, Dogs and Blades QnA

I'm a sucker for the old school cartridges. I just find them more fun to tinker with. The rolling block that I'm working on is chambered in 8x58 Rimmed. Brass is hard to find but I'm able to chamber and fire-form 8x56 Rimmed Hungarian. The brass is 2mm short but that's no big deal. I'm working...

    Commando Valve Cover Bolt Question

I just got done painting my brothers '67 273 engine. I am going to be replacing the original valve covers with Commando cover that I restored. Were these originally fastened with standard valve cover bolts or did they come with chrome bolt? Thanks in advance.

Sublime, your Sharps are beautiful. The one picture on the left has gorgeous wood. Single shot rifles are alluring. I have a Japanese Winchester 1885 in 45-70 that is a tack driver. It's a heavy rifle to carry around in the woods. I only recently became interested in the rolling blocks. The...

Finally, this is my current project. A Swedish rolling block in 8x58 Rimmed that I'm going to make into a proper sporting rifle. The bore is excellent condition. Should be a fun project.

    Guns, Dogs and Blades QnA

Just completed this project. This is a Remington-Lee 1899 sporting rifle in 30-40 Krag. Remington made a total of about 1440 of these sporting rifles in all calibers combined. I purchased the rifle off of an auction site and it was in need of love. The bore is rough but I am getting excellent...

    Guns, Dogs and Blades QnA

I hadn't received alerts for this thread and eventually lost track of it. It took me a while to catch up on all the posts that I missed. I've been working on conserving a couple rifles since my last posts. I purchased this George Gibbs Steyr 1893 rifle chambered in 6.5x53 Rimmed last year. The...

Right Angle Oil Filter Adapter Mounting Bolt Question

I suspect that you would need 2 nuts that fit the stud thread Tighten them both on the stud and then use a wrench to loosen by turning the inner nut.

I took delivery of my newest firearm to add to my collection of misfits. It is a Ross .280 M10 Sporting rifle probably made around 1915. I thought that I would share some pics as most people have never even heard of the rifle let alone seen one. The rifle is very good shape. Some stock dings...

I've never owned a Ruger #1 but I am a big fan of single shot rifles. I just love the lines of a Mannlicher stocked rifle. You should get yourself another one.

I had my threesome of old girls out to the range yesterday. Top is a 1913 Simson & Suhl Commercial Mauser sporting rifle in 8mm (.318). Middle is my Mannlicher model 1905 made in 1920 in 6.5mm. Bottom is my 1910 Mannlicher made in 1913 in 9.5mm. The 6.5 gave me the best group that I have ever...

Hi gzig5. I'm well versed on the correct assembly of the M10 bolt but I thank you for your advice. I will inspect the rifle when it arrives to make sure that it is assembled correctly. I might be able to have a range day on Monday.

I plan on doing on keeping her as a survivor. I will tear her apart and maximize her appearance. I don't want her to look brand new. It's much more fun to keep some of the patina, especially since I plan to take the rifle out in the woods. It's a cool piece of history. She has a built-in pop-up...

    Guns, Dogs and Blades QnA

Hi Folks. I pulled the trigger on another obsolete cartridge rifle last week. I'm hoping that I can pick it up on Saturday. The rifle is a Ross model 1910 straight pull sporting rifle in .280 Ross. This was the first cartridge to propel a 140-gr bullet at over 3,000 fps. This is the grand dad of...

Right Angle Oil Filter Adapter Mounting Bolt Question

I was attaching the right angle adapter on the 273 the other week. Unfortunately, I snapped the large mounting bolt. I was able to remove the threaded portion. I ordered a mounting kit that came with gaskets and a new stronger bolt. Unfortunately, the bolt is short and won't engage the threads...

I had my newest old toy out to the range yesterday. I was primarily checking out a couple different bullet diameters (.354 and .355) to see if she had a preference. It looks like she prefers .355 and 48 grains of IMR4064. This 3 shot group was done at 50 yards with a peep sight. I'm a happy...

Finished most of the 273 this weekend. I'm waiting on the carb to come back from restoration. A couple other odds and ends are on the way. I am familiar with the 721 recall. I elected to simply replace the trigger and safety with a Timney unit. The rifle now has a perfect 2 lb trigger pull without concern about accidental discharge.

    Guns, Dogs and Blades QnA

I inherited my father's Remington 721 30-06 made around 1948. It is the only deer rifle that I own with a scope (Weaver K4). This rifle is from the time when Remington meant quality. The rifle is a tack driver with my reloads. The scope reticle is horrible to see except in daylight. I broke down...
