The transmission was still leaking, so I got this newer style of pan and gasket: I don't think I need the extra capacity, I just wanted a pan that's not 60 years old and bent. The drain plug is a big plus too. Transmission Pan Gasket Unfortunately on a cable shifted early A904 it...

Thanks! I tried that, but in the upper hole it wouldn't start and in the lower hole it didn't really make much difference. I ended up using some carb cleaner and then adjusted idle, timing and idle mixture and the stumble is gone. Also adjusted the choke and fast idle and now it starts really well.

So now that the car is running great, I immediately disassembled the interior to put in some sound deadener. After I pulled the carpet I discovered some surface rust and suddenly this became a much larger project. I wirewheeled the floor, which appears to be relatively thin (but no holes), so...

Today is 3-18 of 2024. HAPPY 318 DAY!!

This 318 (don't believe the air cleaner) is finally running pretty well:

It's been a while. I think since my last post I replaced the intake gasket twice, but finally I'm getting somewhere. I've actually been driving the car quite a bit. There was a coolant leak at the intake and it's possible that that came from the heat crossover block-off plates that I made, but I...

Oil line plug/ low oil pressure on cold starts

Update: I cleaned took apart and cleaned all the lifters and filled the engine with the 5W-30 full synthetic oil. There's still a hint of a tick on cold starts and still takes a moment until it builds oil pressure, but it's quite the improvement! Thanks @Mattax, the thinner oil was great...

Oil line plug/ low oil pressure on cold starts

Got some better snap ring pliers and took that extra lifter I had already replaced apart. Definitely had some dirt in it - no chunks, though. I think I'm going to take them all apart and clean them. I assume that dirt gets in between the bore and the inner piston and that gets them stuck?! I...

Oil line plug/ low oil pressure on cold starts

The lifters were probably overkill... I had heard so much about crappy lifter quality that I wanted something that lasts. Didn't necessarily help I guess. As far as I know it's a stock cam and stock springs. It's a daily driver and not a race car. I already took the intake off to fix the coolant...

Oil line plug/ low oil pressure on cold starts

The lifters are Lunati Micro-Trols. When I installed them, one of them didn't pump up and I replace it with a new one. Yesterday I noticed that another one wasn't pumping up. The cold start issue has been essentially the same since I fired the engine up in the car for the first time. However, I...

Oil line plug/ low oil pressure on cold starts

Thanks. Never ran synthetic, I tried 10w30 or 10w40 and currently running 15w40 rotella.

Oil line plug/ low oil pressure on cold starts

I did install a gauge and it shoots up to 60 psi at the same time the dummy light turns off and the clacking stops.

Oil line plug/ low oil pressure on cold starts

It's not an issue when it's warm.

Oil line plug/ low oil pressure on cold starts

I made sure the pickup is touching the pan. It does take a few seconds to build pressure, but what worries me is the clacking that you can hear in the video.

Oil line plug/ low oil pressure on cold starts

I have an issue with low oil pressure during cold starts like you can see and hear in the video. It's ok when warm. It's a stock 318 within unknown history from craigslist. The engine is pretty clean inside, but I have no idea if it has been rebuilt. New oil pump, pickup, lifters, pushrods and...

    [FOR SALE] 904 push button

Which part? There were no more pushbutton transmissions in ‘65. The valve body part I don’t know for sure. I read that in a few places here on FABO, including this one: 904 pushbutton conversion

    [FOR SALE] 904 push button

Technically if it was in a '65 it's not a pushbutton, but still an early, cable shifted A904. I've been told it would work in a '64 with pushbutton if you swap the valve body.

What oil filter adapter do I need for a 340 in a 1964 plymouth valiant.

I would also consider pointing the adapter down a bit. Mine is pointing up a bit and it appears to drain the oil filter when parked. With my TTi exhaust it's a bit tricky to get to the bolt and I don't really want to touch it, because it's finally not leaking anymore. I'm currently testing...

    65 Barracuda daily driver

I realized how much this thread is also a diary for the car and I can go back and see when I did what. I took no photos today, but got a few things done. One of the rear shocks had a regular washer against the rubber and not a cup washer. I bought a kit with nuts a while ago, so I put them on...

One more thing I noticed that could explain my startup oil pressure issue: I was using a Wix 51515 and before that a STP S8A and after some research I found out that the 51515 doesn't have a standpipe. Don't know about the STP. Both have a anti-drainback valve, which I thought was the same as...

It was a Lunati Micro-Trol lifter and that's what I ordered to replace it. No, I didn't clean them. They're made in USA and someone here on FABO recommended them. They have these snap rings instead of a wire. I bought some cheap Harbor Freight snap ring pliers, but those are too flimsy to get...

    65 Barracuda daily driver

Merry Christmas and thanks for all your help! Aside from the valve train noise the engine runs pretty good, so I hope it's gonna be that bad. I marked the dipstick in mid-October, so since then it should have been close to ok, maybe a touch overfull. Who knows how long the previous owner drove...

So I measured my dipstick and compared it to some correct dimensions I found here on FABO. I'm a visual person and I use CAD for work on a daily basis, so here you go. Roughly, when my dipstick showed full, it was really at the bottom of the safe area. 1/2" off, which equals a quart. My new...

    65 Barracuda daily driver

Sooooooooooooo... Long story short: I took off the intake AGAIN... Here's why: I finished cleaning up the valve tips, put it all back together and fired her up. Same, if not worse clacking. Oil pressure took longer than before to build up. At some point I had not been super confident on the...

One side of valves smoothed. Tried files, but in the end 150 grit sandpaper worked much better. Cleaned it up with 600 grit. Also smoothed the new rockers (left before, right after): I won't have a lot of time tomorrow, but I hope I can get the other side done and install the rockers...

    65 Barracuda daily driver

So I cleaned and inspected the old and the "new" rocker arms and shafts. The old shaft had some heavy wear around the oil holes: A lot of the old rockers had this pointy raised spot on the surface that contacts the shaft: I wonder if that caused the damage by the oil holes, but a few...

Yes, I went and got the rockers! Thank you for the tip! The shafts are nice and clean. Interestingly all of the rockers have different markings -at least the ones in the top row come in pairs (same number LT/RT). I will clean them all up and take the best ones of both sets to make one nice and...
