Looking for a SB valve cover that I can cut up in order to reduce oil splashing while diagnosing a top end tick on my 340; just needs to seal at the bottom, and I'm cutting out the entire top.

This is a SBM 340, stock rocker (non-adjustable) / rocker shafts, hydraulic lifters, all same length pushrods. Noise started out of nowhere with 8k miles.

I've used the stethoscope, as mentioned; cannot isolate it to a single location. ALL of the pushrods can be spun by hand with the valves CLOSED, this is not normal?

Alright guys - I installed new exhaust manifold gaskets - still ticking. Went through once again, checking for any play in rockers after getting it up to temp, no play. All lifters are staying primed. how much pre-load should there be on these lifters? Should I be able to spin the pushrods...

No misfire at all; Heads were re-done 10+ years ago, I'm sure it's got newer seats in it.

I highly doubt the surface of a lifter will be convex already, I just replaced these lifters in the fall and have about 30 miles on them. Rockers coming off now, and will post pictures.

Through the distributor hole, or somewhere else? I don't see how they can get through the heads...

No, it is tight, but i turned the motor over numerous times, and this lifter started de-priming; assumed to be from being beat by the notchy rocker I will pull them apart now, and post pictures of any proof of wear. This is the only on that shows some weird play, and putting the stethoscope...

You're talking the very front and very rear bolts? Those stayed in, so I guess their siliconed in nicely. If they come out, I'll re-seal, otherwise I'll let them be happy

GUYS!!!!!!!!!! I think I found it!!!! Appears to be a bad rocker; She's blown out. Motor stopped perfectly for me to finally see it. Cyl4, Int rocker is gone. It's got a weird notch to it. Going to re-prime the lifter and see if it still does it. See video...

The sound just sounds so mechanical that i pushed the exhaust off... still no definitive blow through, but definitely a leak.

Ok, So , new fuel pump installed, knew that was a long shot, but still didn't seem right, so I replaced it. Installed everything back up, ran it still ticking - the same. pulled valve cover ( and broke a plug wire while at it, pulled the damn end right out of it - ordering new wires - check)...

Good eye, I was wondering the same thing; They have not been removed from the shaft, so they're in the order they have been for 10+ years minimum, but it still stood out to me.

nm9stheham mentioned the same thing about the oiling, thank you guys for clarifying. Does not appear to be broken, and intact. Just seems like an excessive amount of side-to-side play, and a weird wear groove in the arm of the pump, leading me to believe it is potentially hopping around in...

Gotcha - I assumed the oiling from the shafts simply kept the ID of the rockers OD of the shafts lubed, and I thought the pushrods oiled up to the top end also - Thanks for the lesson. I figured the lifters simply 'squirted' oil up the push rods to the rockers for additional oiling. Again...
