    Oil dipstick full mark

I compared the new and the old dipstick today and noticed that they are essentially identical. Looks like I didn't measure it correctly the first time around. At least I know now that I'm in the ballpark and not an inch and a half off. I will check again when I change the oil. Oil filter is a...

    Oil dipstick full mark

For the record, I've daily driven my Barracuda for 15 years, but I replaced the slant 6 that was in it with a 318 about two years ago and had a lot of problems with it. It's my first small block and I'm still learning. From what I gathered the 273, 318 and 340 oil pans from '64-'72 are...

    Oil dipstick full mark

The engine is a '69 318 block with unknown, but likely stock internals, 163 (smog?) heads, Edelbrock Performer intake and carb, early 90 degree oil filter adapter, stock A-body oil pan (294) in a '65 Barracuda. Came out of a '68 Dart, so wasn't the original engine in that car either. Previous...

    65 Barracuda daily driver

"Salma" turned 59 years old today! Built 4/29/1965 in Hamtramck. Hopefully I'll have all the bodywork done by the time she turns 60... I'm still chasing an ATF leak. It's still at that spot where the pan has a little cut out for the park lock housing. I think that modern gasket is not made...

    Oil dipstick full mark

Thank you!!! Accordingly the answer to my question is that the full mark is about 8-7/8" below the block. Which means the Amazon dipstick is with 8-7/16" the closest to that and I potentially have way too much oil in my engine. I will double check next time I change oil and filter.

    Oil dipstick full mark

I apologize for being a pain in the butt, but I'm looking for a specific answer. I want to know how many inches the oil level is supposed to be from where the tube enters the block. Chrysler must have had a value for that. Even if you change the filter, there's probably still some oil in the...

    Oil dipstick full mark

I know this question has been asked and answered many times, but I will ask one more time specifically: What is the distance between the block and the full mark on a stock passenger car small block oil dipstick? I know I could fill the engine with 5 quarts of oil and then mark it, but that's not...

Project "Chihuahua" '65 Formula S Restoration "Estilo Mexicano"

I just took mine out when I reinstalled the dash speaker and the self-cutting nuts are not a great design. I would still tighten them all the way - not because they would come out, but because otherwise they will rattle, which I find super annoying.

    65 Barracuda daily driver

Went to Spring Fling on Saturday and actually found some parts I needed. Well, I bought the ECU as a spare, but only noticed later it's a 5-pin. Came with the plug/ wiring, which is not bad to have as a spare as well. The A/C bracket supposedly only works with power steering and a shorty Sanden...

    65 Barracuda daily driver

I started on prepping a better deck lid for paint, but I didn't take photos of that yet. Last night I started refinishing the letters though. In this photo the chrome looks a lot worse than it actually is. First time using an eyedropper instead of spraying or brushing. Not bad, cleaned the...

    65 Barracuda daily driver

So that cut I did on the transmission oil pan was apparently too much and it was leaking from there. So I can't really recommend that pan for an early, cable shifted A904. Anyways, I got the neutral safety switch out and the gasket had barely any rubber left on it. Instead there was more bathtub...

    65 Barracuda daily driver

No, and I'm not sure if there's a spacer for the cable shifted A904s with the "2-hole" filters.

    65 Barracuda daily driver

I worked on quite a few things on the Barracuda. This was one of my favorites - only one of the three bulbs in the gauge cluster was working, which meant you couldn't really read any of the gauges. I took the cluster out, cleaned everything and changed the (LED) bulbs, but that only fixed the...

    65 Barracuda daily driver

The transmission was still leaking, so I got this newer style of pan and gasket: I don't think I need the extra capacity, I just wanted a pan that's not 60 years old and bent. The drain plug is a big plus too. Transmission Pan Gasket Unfortunately on a cable shifted early A904 it...

    65 Barracuda daily driver

Thanks! I tried that, but in the upper hole it wouldn't start and in the lower hole it didn't really make much difference. I ended up using some carb cleaner and then adjusted idle, timing and idle mixture and the stumble is gone. Also adjusted the choke and fast idle and now it starts really well.

    65 Barracuda daily driver

So now that the car is running great, I immediately disassembled the interior to put in some sound deadener. After I pulled the carpet I discovered some surface rust and suddenly this became a much larger project. I wirewheeled the floor, which appears to be relatively thin (but no holes), so...

This 318 (don't believe the air cleaner) is finally running pretty well:

    65 Barracuda daily driver

It's been a while. I think since my last post I replaced the intake gasket twice, but finally I'm getting somewhere. I've actually been driving the car quite a bit. There was a coolant leak at the intake and it's possible that that came from the heat crossover block-off plates that I made, but I...

Oil line plug/ low oil pressure on cold starts

Update: I cleaned took apart and cleaned all the lifters and filled the engine with the 5W-30 full synthetic oil. There's still a hint of a tick on cold starts and still takes a moment until it builds oil pressure, but it's quite the improvement! Thanks @Mattax, the thinner oil was great...

Oil line plug/ low oil pressure on cold starts

Got some better snap ring pliers and took that extra lifter I had already replaced apart. Definitely had some dirt in it - no chunks, though. I think I'm going to take them all apart and clean them. I assume that dirt gets in between the bore and the inner piston and that gets them stuck?! I...

Oil line plug/ low oil pressure on cold starts

The lifters were probably overkill... I had heard so much about crappy lifter quality that I wanted something that lasts. Didn't necessarily help I guess. As far as I know it's a stock cam and stock springs. It's a daily driver and not a race car. I already took the intake off to fix the coolant...

Oil line plug/ low oil pressure on cold starts

The lifters are Lunati Micro-Trols. When I installed them, one of them didn't pump up and I replace it with a new one. Yesterday I noticed that another one wasn't pumping up. The cold start issue has been essentially the same since I fired the engine up in the car for the first time. However, I...

Thanks. Never ran synthetic, I tried 10w30 or 10w40 and currently running 15w40 rotella.

I did install a gauge and it shoots up to 60 psi at the same time the dummy light turns off and the clacking stops.

It's not an issue when it's warm.

Oil line plug/ low oil pressure on cold starts

I made sure the pickup is touching the pan. It does take a few seconds to build pressure, but what worries me is the clacking that you can hear in the video.

Oil line plug/ low oil pressure on cold starts

I have an issue with low oil pressure during cold starts like you can see and hear in the video. It's ok when warm. It's a stock 318 within unknown history from craigslist. The engine is pretty clean inside, but I have no idea if it has been rebuilt. New oil pump, pickup, lifters, pushrods and...

    [FOR SALE] 904 push button

Which part? There were no more pushbutton transmissions in ‘65. The valve body part I don’t know for sure. I read that in a few places here on FABO, including this one: 904 pushbutton conversion

    [FOR SALE] 904 push button

Technically if it was in a '65 it's not a pushbutton, but still an early, cable shifted A904. I've been told it would work in a '64 with pushbutton if you swap the valve body.
