I have a 71 duster and am welding in a new shifter bracket and console brackets. The car is originally a column shift. Is there a mark or some spot I can use as a starting point? Otherwise I should wait until trans is back in car to align it? Any thoughts?

I am pat, I live in a suburb of Vancouver Canada. , I have recently bought a 71 duster. It looks like a 340 but is a 318. 727,8 3/4 sure grip, buckets console. . Has sassy grass green paint, go wing, hood scoops, stripes with 340 call outs. I've found for a bodies only to be a great resource.
