How full is my oil pan?

I went through this exercise with my recent rebuild of my 340. I have the Milodon #30935, 8 qt pan. The photos are with the pan filled with 8 qts of water. The water level is 4 inches down from the pan rail.

Need Advice on Machining the Intake Surface of the Head (gasket crush)

Just wanted to add that the intake is an aluminum 6 Pack manifold. I was more concerned about sucking oil from the valley into the intakes if I don't seal well on the ports. I called Cometic about thicker gaskets. They have a 0.060 like Felpro, the next size up is 0.094 thick. Nothing in...

Need Advice on Machining the Intake Surface of the Head (gasket crush)

I used the washers to simulate the thickness of the intake gasket and limit the crush of the clay. I plan on using the Felpro gasket that leaves the heat crossover open. The gasket measures 0.055 / 0.060. On the drivers side head, that gasket thickness looks marginal on bottom the ports. Did you...

Need Advice on Machining the Intake Surface of the Head (gasket crush)

Got my open chamber heads (3418915B's) back from the machine shop. They removed 0.012 from the deck side to reduce the chamber size to adjust compression. They did not take any material off the intake side of the head. I've performed a trial fit of the intake manifold / heads on the motor with...

Checking Intake Manifold Fit After Resurfacing Heads

Some clarification on the interference problem I discovered. My first mockup of the shortblock used the new Race Tecs before the chamfer was added around the OD. The first cylinder I measured was #8, which had the largest above deck height, approximately 0.025. I brought the piston up to TDC...

Checking Intake Manifold Fit After Resurfacing Heads

I have a lot of clearance piston-to-valves. The interference I referred to was piston-to-head. I'll post more info when I return from the machine shop today.

Checking Intake Manifold Fit After Resurfacing Heads

This is odd sounding.... sounds like you have pistons like the Speed Pro L2316's... what pistons DO you have? Is this without a head gasket in-between head and block? Even then, this sounds odd... How much has the deck been cut so far, if any? Standard early 340 pistons stick around .018" above...

Checking Intake Manifold Fit After Resurfacing Heads

Working on my 1970 340. I have open chamber "O" heads (3418915B), 2.02 / 1.60's with tulip valves. Just got the heads back from the machine shop after a cleanup on the seats and valves. The combustion chambers are measuring an average of 78cc's, so they're going back to the shop to remove 0.020...

How much should a basic 340 rebuild cost?

Just a suggestion here. I just spent the weekend at Road America / Elkhart Lake for the Vintage Race Weekend. Looking for Info / Specs on Obsolete Mopar Piston

Just wanted to give an update on where I'm going with this engine refresh. I talked to Jim at Racer Brown and he didn't recommend doing a custom grind cam to reduce the DCR. He said I needed to get the SCR down to about 9.5 for a street motor. I talked to a local engine builder (Opel...

Looking for Info / Specs on Obsolete Mopar Piston

What value of "intake valve close ABDC" did you use that gave you 8.19 DCR? How would this cam affect driveability? RPM band would move down? Idle quality and idle vacuum would improve? Or do I have those backwards?
