318 Build.. Zero Deck or Stock Deck Clearance?

Thanks DJones for letting me bust into your thread. I just didn't think it deserved a thread of its own and this seemed like a good place to discuss it. Thanks fellas for responding. IMO compression ratio should be your first target in an engine build and I wasn't sure what would be the proper...

318 Build.. Zero Deck or Stock Deck Clearance?

Long ago I had a 69 Barracuda Notchback. The 318 had a pair of 360 1.88 valved heads to replace the old 318 heads that had cracked exhaust valves. The fix for the wiped cam lobe was a Comp Cams High Energy 260H. Weiand Action Plus with a 625 Carter on top. Converted to Chrysler Electronic...

318 Build.. Zero Deck or Stock Deck Clearance?

What do you figure is a good number for Static Compression to aim for on a 318 running 87 octane ?

318 Build.. Zero Deck or Stock Deck Clearance?

Laffin. My next 318 will be aimed at REGULAR and I see post after post here concerned that Premium will NOT be ENOUGH.

    Early A V8 Headers/Exhaust

Hmmm. Sorry. Didn't realize the shock towers and such were that much different. I even changed my Dart to 11" clutch which necessitated a Lakewood bell-housing and STILL cleared well. Didn't "Cook" the stock starter either.

    Early A V8 Headers/Exhaust

73 Dodge Dart. I've used Cyclone and I've used Summit House Brand. Both had zero clearance issues. I also said that I changed that car to manual steering. Only real issue I had with these was I don't like the way the tubes that run below the steering linkage have limited ground clearance. My...

    Early A V8 Headers/Exhaust

Or switched to manual steering. After installing a manual steering gearbox from a salvage yard I was able to install $180.00 set of headers with zero clearance issues. 1973 DODGE DART 5.2L 318cid V8 Steering Gear | RockAuto 1973 DODGE DART 5.2L 318cid V8 Pitman Arm | RockAuto 1973 DODGE...

Yet another 273 build advice thread!

I completely understand the limitations of the build I used as an example which is one reason I used it. Even in my example a 260 adv. dur. cam worked REALLY well which made me feel that the 252 cam OP is considering seems a little low. Hmm. Another thing, I fully understand that custom grind IS...

Yet another 273 build advice thread!

I looked it up. 360 2brl stock cam 71-74 is a split hydraulic. 410/412 252/256 75 and up is straight hydraulic. 410/410 252/252 I've seen many suggest that split cams do NOT work well with exhaust manifolds. My 69 Barracuda Notch-Back had a stock 318 bottom end, a pair of regular smog type 1.88...

    Early A V8 Headers/Exhaust

The FIRST mod I EVER did to the FIRST car I EVER had was Intake and Carburetor, Headers and Exhaust. It was like awakening a MONSTER that had been sleeping in that stock 318 in that 73 Swinger ! It has been my TOP priority ever since.

    Early A V8 Headers/Exhaust

Which part number did you use for that NOT hitting the steering box fit and how many tricks did you learn to get them installed ?

    Early A V8 Headers/Exhaust

I changed my 73 Dart from power steering to manual steering. Even with the smaller than stock Grant steering wheel it was easy to drive even when maneuvering in parking lots and such, it eliminated that numb zero feedback feeling which GREATLY added to cornering confidence, eliminated that ugly...

    273 Build

I read that post on the "Doggyness" of different compression levels. Unfortunately my question was more to gage what I have to work with than what I should be aiming for. The cylinder walls still show the crosshatch marks from the hone and no discernible ridge at the top of its travel so those...

Cams How do you choose one?

Looks similar to the 260 advertised duration 440 lift hydraulic that worked VERY well in my 318. COMP Cams High Energy Camshafts 20-210-2 The 108 lobe separation stood out to me. I was expecting 110 from a cam that mild. Did he give any details as to why he chose this lobe separation ?

    Edelbrock 1404 on 318

I like the 1404 for that engine. If you run the numbers, even with 85% Volumetric Efficiency, it only comes out to 430 CFM at 5500 RPM. A 600 will work. I've seen it done. But the 500 will be MUCH livelier.

    273 Build

Scratching my head. At 64cc and flat-top I came up with only an 8.3:1 compression ratio. Does that sound right to you ? Sure. It makes for a street engine that can run well on regular gas but it certainly limits power output.

What is the chamber volume on these close chambered 315 heads ?

    273 Build

All those 273 goodies AND Three Pedals ?? You are my hero !! I didn't see which trans you are using. I had a 23 spline four speed in a 73 Dart with a 360. Took MASSIVE abuse and kept on keepin on. I saw where you found some things in your engine that just didn't seem right. Next time I'm at the...

    Rocker Adjustment

Could be. I asked the folks at Comp Cams Tech and they were clueless. As if they had never heard of this combination.
  22. L

    Rocker Adjustment

The heads are off. There's no signs or stamps to suggest that the heads or block have ever been milled. Going to start with the TA pushrods and hope for the best. If that doesn't work at least I know where to go from there.
  23. L

    Rocker Adjustment

I just can't get over this thing where Chrysler somehow made all their LA engines each with its own custom length pushrods.
  24. L

Yet another 273 build advice thread!

Yup. The plunger travel within the lifter itself will allow the pushrod to be slightly longer than needed. We are building a mild low maintenance engine. The two barrel carb, points and solid cam were at the top of the list of things that HAD TO change.

Yet another 273 build advice thread!

Yes. Hydraulic flat tappet and stock adjustable rockers in a 273. I had read so many post here where people had WAY overthunk this mod. So many insisted that custom pushrods were the ONLY way possible. Instead of starting yet another thread on the subject I commented on several threads hoping...

    Rocker Adjustment

I had read that the stock replacement pushrods for the 340 Six-Pack would work for my application but saw some people argue that it was too simple a solution therefore could not POSSIBLY work.
  27. L

    Rocker Adjustment

COOL !! Thanks !! I take it that the adjustables are oiled through the rocker shafts therefore can use solid pushrods. Please feel free to copy and paste your response to the MULTIPLE threads on this where people have WAY overthunk this modification.
  28. L

Yet another 273 build advice thread!

Be glad for stock non-adjustable rockers. I'm trying to find info on changing my 273 to hydraulic flat tappet and every post I see says this REQUIRES custom pushrods because somehow there has never been an off-the-shelf pushrod made for this mod even though it's been done millions of times.
  29. L

    Rocker Adjustment

My point is WHY ? This mod has been done a BAZILLION times. The difference in height between the hydraulic and solid lifter cup is a KNOWN dimension. If I am simply changing from solid to hydraulic, ANY manufacturer SHOULD know EXACTLY what I'm looking for. I even saw one thread where there was...

Cams How do you choose one?

It also helps to ask the manufacturer which engine in the family they are basing there descriptions on. Comp Cams bases their LA cam descriptions on a 360. That same cam will act MUCH differently in a 318 or 273.
