    1970 VF Valiant from NZ

Thank you for replies. Even though it’s only a small area of the car it felt like a major hurdle to me so I’m really glad it’s done. I’m hoping to get some help from a friend who is a panel beater to put the new quarter on soon.

More patches today... I’m getting tired of this stage of the project. Still not quite finished but I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel instead of through the rust holes :D

I’ve used panel-bond before, it’s great stuff but all these patches are getting welded.

Well I’ve managed to get back into the shed now the travel restrictions have eased a little. My goal is to get the inner cowl panel finished up so I can get some paint on it before spot welding the upper cowl back on, then I will prime everything from the windscreen forward.

    Jeep 4.0 in 69 Barracuda

I’ve just found and read through this entire thread. I really like the idea and I’m glad you’re still updating. I’m looking at doing a 4.0 and AW4 conversion into an Australian VF Valiant coupe, almost the same as a Dodge Dart. I see you had oil pan clearance issues, I’m wondering if I can get...

Thanks, I’ll check them out. I think I’ll end up just making my own patches though.

My final task I started on just before this Coronavirus lockdown. I could see that the front of the cowl panel was a little bit rusty and was going to require a patch on each side. I started by cutting the left side out but when I shone a torch (flashlight) in through the whole I noticed a small...

Unfortunately the gutter around the boot (trunk) was pretty much gone on the left side and the piece where the tail light mounts had been messed with so I couldn’t finalise the quarter fitment. I’ve ordered a gutter from the US so hopefully I can get back to that after lockdown is over. Having...

I’ve never tried welding using fluxcore but I’ve heard it’s difficult with thin stuff.

    Engine swap idea

Thanks for all the responses guys. No, the magnum engines aren’t available here unless I import one. LS engines are but they’re still around $5000. Jeep 4.7 V8s are cheap but from what I’ve read they’re not a great option. The AW4 transmission is an Aisin Warner trans, Toyota uses it behind...

    Engine swap idea

Yes I’ve heard there are possible height issues although I’ve also read they’re the same height as the Hemi 6 so I guess I’ll just have to get my tape measure out. From what I was reading there might be a centre sump from an AMC that will fit, again more research is needed. The transmission is...

    Engine swap idea

Alright let’s see how this goes :mob: I’m working on an Australian 1970 VF Valiant Coupe, essentially the same as a Dart but slightly long nose. It didn’t come with an engine or transmission and I don’t care too much for originality. I would however quite like to keep it Mopar. I looked at...

Thanks! It was at this point that I got offered a bulk deal of parts including brand new quarters and door skins, an engine and a whole bunch of other stuff. So I borrowed my dads van and a trailer and drove 12 hours round trip to pick them up. I won’t go into details but I only ended up...

Removing the rear quarter revealed even more rust but it really wasn’t as bad as I was expecting. So I got to work cutting and patching.

    What is this mopar ?

In Australia the VG Valiant coupe was available as a limited run (200 I believe) with the longer rear pillar like the Brazilian Charger. It was sold as the Valiant Regal Mexicana

Next up I decided to tackle the removal of the rear quarter. It came off really easily because there was very little still holding it on :(

It’s not galvanised. Thanks for the tip. Oh nice, Whitianga is a great spot! Haha sorry. It’s probably still sitting in the guys shed I would imagine.

I went and looked at a fairly tidy one a couple of months ago.

Yes they’re indicators (turn signals) Once I got the front guards off I got a better looks at the front of the sills, which of course needed rebuilding... I haven’t done much welding before so I’m teaching myself as I go, slowly getting the hang of it, but try not to judge my work to...

Nice VG! Looks very tidy. So I started pricing up replacement panels but by the time you pay shipping, tax and do the currency conversion a rear quarter panel was going to cost me around $2300NZD ($1400US) I ended up finding a guy selling a complete rear inner and outer quarter for $400 that...

Yeah it’s certainly keeping me busy. These photos are a few months old, it’s changed a bit since then, I’ll keep posting over the next couple of days until I’m up to date. Then any new progress will have to wait for the Covid-19 lockdown to be over.

Now I mentioned that this car had some rust issues... The left rear quarter is by far the worst part, but the lower front guards (fenders) are gone too and the sills (rockers) are pretty sad too. No doubt I’ll find plenty more problems as I go :BangHead:

Last year I was helping out in a small car restoration shop and one of the owners mates came in to sit around and chat (as he often did) about his latest wheeling and dealing. He was a Ford guy but had just done a deal on a 1970 Vf Valiant Hardtop. He showed me some photos but I didn’t show too...

    Hello from New Zealand

Hi everyone. I’m partway through a rebuild of an Australian 1970 Chrysler VF Valiant Hardtop. I’ve been reading lots of stuff on here so thought I should share my build.
